Cala Pi

Cala Pi - idyllic sandy bay between cliffs

Naturparadies in der Bucht Cala Pi an Mallorcas Südküste

With a length of 420 m and width of up to 100 m wide, the bay of Cala Pi, flows into the interior of Mallorca. The inlet has steep cliffs on both sides, with snow-white villas perched on the tops. The deep blue waters of this fjord-like estuary form a breath-taking contrast to the bright sandy beach and the grey cliffs. Cala Pi is located on the south coast of Mallorca and due to its rocky landscape is one of the most unspoilt places on the island.

Location of Cala Pi

The bay of Cala Pi is located on the south coast of Mallorca in the municipality of Llucmajor. The main town is 21 km from this stretch of coast. Access is via the MA-6015 road. It’s about 25 minutes by car from Llucmajor. Llucmajor is to the north of Cala Pi, while Campos to the north east is another small town 25 minutes away and can be reached via the MA-6014. Mallorca's Son Sant Joan International Airport is around 40 minutes' drive, depending on traffic.

The bay forms the mouth of Torrent de Cala Pi, which fills with water after the heaviest rains. Most of the year, the rocky river bed is dried up but fills up to become a brackish water pool. Over the course of millennia, the stream has eroded a deep gorge out of the rock. To the southeast is the settlement of Cala Pi. Rocky landscapes with pines and Mediterranean scrub are prevalent to the north and west.

Fine sandy beach at the end of the bay

For many visitors, the fine sandy beach at the end of Cala Pi is one of the most beautiful on the island. It is a good 50 metres wide and consists of light, soft sand and stretches 125 metres into the gorge of Torrent de Cala Pi. Since the bay has a significant bend, the open sea is not visible from the beach, but this doesn’t take anything away from the beautiful, romantic ambience along this stretch of coast. On both sides of the sandy beach, the cliffs tower 30 m high.

Pines, Aleppo pines, holm oaks and maquis add a Mediterranean flair with their different shades of greenery. On the west side, several whitewashed boathouses decorate the bay with their dark green painted gates. Relaxing on this lovely beach is not without a degree of effort. To get to the beach, holiday-makers and locals need to make a little effort to get there.

From the steep coast, the path leads down 147 stone steps down to sea level. Of course, this requires a bit of energy on the way back after a relaxing day at the beach. Despite this handicap, the bay is well frequented during the summer months. Families with children, in particular, appreciate the gently sloping beach and the shallow water. Due to the sheltered location of Cala Pi the beach is refreshingly wave-free. In the high season, there is a lifeguard on duty watching over things from a purpose-built wooden tower.

Amenities and activities

The sandy beach at the end of this mini-fjord has very little in terms of facilities for tourists. In summer, beach chairs are rented out and there is the lifeguard but no organised water sports. There is a small beach bar providing visitors with chilled drinks and snacks. Cala Pi is a first-class bay for snorkelers. In particular, on the rocky cliffs on both sides of the bay, there are some interesting marine creatures including shoals of monk fish and, with a bit of luck, you might see an octopus among the rocks.

The picturesque location of the bay attracts numerous sailing boats during the summer months. You can take a leisurely walk from the beach to the ancient Torre de Cala Pi. The stone watchtower, which was built in 1663 to protect against attacks by North African pirates, stands on the Punta de Cala Pi cape.

Cala Pi - coastal town on the cliff tops

The small town of Cala Pi was named after the bay of the same name. Although it is one of the oldest settlements in Mallorca, mass tourism has not found its way here. There are some small hotels and several apartments but not much more. Around 630 inhabitants live in the settlement on the cliffs, which consists primarily of villas.

The settlement extends from the watchtower, Torre de Cala Pi to the mouth of Torrent de Sa Punta de Sa Dent. Like the torrent at Cala Pi, this river only fills up after heavy rains. Unlike in the tourist hotspots of El Arenal, Alcúdia and Cala Millor, it is quiet in the village of Cala Pi. There are no clubs or late opening bars and also the range of shops is somewhat limited.

The fjord-like bay Cala Pi is a landscape jewel on the south coast of island. The bay with its fine sandy beach and crystal-clear waters is an ideal destination for a day trip.
