Trío Los Panchos comptent parmi les groupes de musique latino-américaine les plus influents de l'histoire. Fondé le 14 mai 1944 au Hispanic Theatre de New York City par les musiciens mexicains Alfredo Gil et Chucho Navarro, ainsi que le chanteur portoricain Hernando Avilés, le groupe est rapidement devenu l'un des principaux ambassadeurs du boléro romantique. Gil a inventé pour le trio le requinto, une guitare plus petite accordée plus haut, qui est devenu la signature de leur son à trois voix.
Après leurs premiers succès à New York, dont une apparition au Radio City Music Hall, le trio s'est installé à Mexico en 1948, alors centre de la musique latino-américaine. Il y a été célébré par l'influente station de radio XEW-AM et est apparu dans une cinquantaine de films, principalement durant l'âge d'or du cinéma mexicain.
À l'international, Los Panchos ont connu leur plus grand succès grand public avec les albums *Amor* (1964) et *More Amor* (1965), sur lesquels la chanteuse américaine Eydie Gormé chantait en espagnol. La compilation *24 Grandes Canciones* (1994), enregistrée avec Gormé, a atteint la 31e place du Billboard Top Latin Albums. Le trio a publié des disques chez Columbia Records et Seeco, et vendu des millions d'albums en Amérique latine, aux États-Unis et au Japon. Actifs depuis 1944, Los Panchos perpétuent encore aujourd'hui leur héritage.
