Aquelarre nacque nel 1971 a Buenos Aires dalle ceneri dell’influente gruppo argentino Almendra: il bassista Emilio del Güercio e il batterista Rodolfo García si unirono al chitarrista Héctor Starc e al tastierista Hugo González Neira. Il debutto ufficiale arrivò nel 1972, poco dopo l’esibizione al festival B.A.Rock-II del 1971. Il loro stile era più ricercato rispetto al rock argentino mainstream dell’epoca: testi surrealisti, continui cambi di ritmo e melodia e incursioni nel free jazz ne caratterizzavano il suono. Tra il 1972 e il 1975 pubblicarono quattro album per le etichette Trova e Talent/Microfon: l’omonimo esordio (1972), Candiles (1973), Brumas (1974) e Siesta (1975). Nel 1975 il gruppo fu in tournée in Spagna. Nel 1977 gran parte della formazione, senza González Neira, tornò in Argentina per un concerto conclusivo. Negli anni Novanta e Duemila ci furono due periodi di reunion, dal 1996 al 1998 e dal 2004 al 2013. Oggi gli Aquelarre sono considerati tra i più importanti esponenti del rock progressivo e psichedelico argentino.
