Paul van Dyk, all’anagrafe Matthias Paul, è nato il 16 dicembre 1971 a Eisenhüttenstadt, nella DDR. Cresciuto a Berlino Est, ha scoperto la musica elettronica ascoltando di nascosto le emittenti dell’Ovest. Dopo la caduta del Muro è tornato a Est e ha avviato la carriera da DJ, anche nel leggendario club berlinese Tresor a partire dal 1991. Il primo passo importante verso la scena internazionale è stato il progetto con Cosmic Baby, The Visions of Shiva, prima di pubblicare nel 1994 l’album d’esordio *45 RPM*, che conteneva l’ormai iconico „For an Angel". Nel 1998 ha lasciato MFS Records per fondare la propria etichetta, Vandit Records, che dirige da allora. Il suo album *Reflections* (2003) lo ha reso il primo DJ in assoluto a ottenere una nomination ai Grammy nella categoria Best Dance/Electronic Album. Nel 2005 e nel 2006 DJ Magazine lo ha eletto miglior DJ del mondo, assegnandogli il primo posto; è stato inoltre il primo DJ a raggiungere la vetta della classifica di Mixmag. Entro il 2008 aveva venduto oltre tre milioni di album nel mondo. L’album *From Then On* (2017, Vandit Records) è nato dopo un grave incidente sul palco ed è stato celebrato da Billboard come „a celebration of a beautiful life". Paul van Dyk si esibisce regolarmente in festival come Tomorrowland e Creamfields ed è presente anche a Ibiza con la sua serie di eventi SHINE.
