U2 are one of the most influential rock bands in music history, formed in Dublin, Ireland, in 1976. The four members – Bono (vocals), The Edge (guitar, keyboards), Adam Clayton (bass), and Larry Mullen Jr. (drums) – have performed together in the same lineup since their teenage years. Originally known as Feedback and then The Hype, they settled on the name U2 in 1978.
Musically, U2 started out as a post-punk rock band with politically charged lyrics and Christian themes – a bold stance in late-1970s Ireland. They found their signature sound with their third album, *War* (1983). Global stardom came with *The Joshua Tree* in 1987, which earned them eight number-one albums and a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. *Achtung Baby* (1991) marked yet another stylistic reinvention.
Their debut album *Boy* was released in 1980 on Island Records, the label that shaped their career from the start. Live, U2 have been one of the most powerful forces in stadium rock for decades. Bono is also a prominent humanitarian activist, campaigning against poverty and AIDS – he was named TIME magazine's "Person of the Year" in 2005.
