Franz Liszt

Franz Liszt (22 oktober 1811, Doborján/nu Raiding, Oostenrijk – 31 juli 1886, Bayreuth) was een van de belangrijkste pianisten en componisten van de romantiek. Zijn vader Adam Liszt herkende zijn talent al vroeg en stimuleerde het intensief; op negenjarige leeftijd trad Liszt al in het openbaar op. Hij werd onder meer opgeleid door Carl Czerny in Wenen en groeide snel uit tot een gevierd virtuoos in heel Europa – zijn zogeheten „Glanzzeit"-decennium in de jaren 1840 maakte hem tot de populairste concertster van de 19e eeuw. In 1847 overtuigde prinses Carolyne zu Sayn-Wittgenstein hem om het tourleven op te geven; zijn laatste betaalde concert gaf hij in Jelisawetgrad. Als componist schiep Liszt het genre van het symfonisch gedicht en schreef hij twaalf werken binnen dit genre. Tot zijn bekendste composities behoren de Hongaarse Rapsodieën, de Pianosonate in b-klein en de Liebesträume. Hij onderhield nauwe artistieke relaties met Richard Wagner en gaf in de loop van zijn leven les aan honderden pianisten. In 1865 trad hij toe tot de lagere geestelijkheid van de katholieke kerk en stond hij voortaan bekend als „Abbé Liszt".
