Alexander Malter

Alexander Malter was born in 1946 in Moscow and is one of the most distinguished Russian pianists of his generation. He studied at the renowned Tchaikovsky Conservatory under Tatjana Nikolajewa and Oxana Jablonskaja, graduating in 1969 and subsequently developing an intensive career as a soloist, accompanist and chamber musician. From the mid-1980s, concert engagements from Western Europe grew steadily, and in 1991 he moved to Germany. His repertoire spans Bach, Haydn, Schubert and Chopin alongside Russian masters such as Tchaikovsky, Scriabin and Rachmaninov, as well as contemporary music. He gained international recognition through the ECM recording "Alina" by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt – a bestseller on which Pärt himself praised Malter's interpretive artistry. A further CD featuring Pärt-influenced music for the Hollywood production "Fireflies in the Garden" was released on the Decca label. A 2006 double CD commemorating the 100th birthday of Dietrich Bonhoeffer brought together works from Bach to Chopin. As co-founder and artistic director of the concert series at Glienicke Castle in Berlin, and since 2005 director of the "Festival de Música Clásica Port de Sóller" on Mallorca, he has a particularly close connection to the island.
