Els Blavets de Lluc – formally known as the Escolania de Lluc – is one of the oldest choral ensembles in the Balearic Islands. The choir's roots stretch back to the 13th century, while the choir school itself was established in the 16th century at the Lluc sanctuary in Mallorca's Tramuntana mountains. The singers take their name from their distinctive blue cassocks – "blau" means blue in Catalan. Today the ensemble comprises around forty boys and girls who study at the Santuari de Lluc as boarders or day pupils. They perform the Salve every day at 13:15, and also sing on Sundays and at special masses. The choir is particularly renowned for its Holy Week performances and for the traditional Cant de la Sibil·la – a medieval prophecy of the end of the world – sung each Christmas. Discographically, the ensemble is documented by the Christmas album "Nadal Blau" (2001, Ona Digital), featuring works by Gabriel Miralles and Antonio Martorell under the musical direction of Baltasar Bibiloni. Earlier releases include "Cançons de l'Escolania del Santuari de Nostra Senyora de Lluc" (1983, Audiovisuals de Sarrià) and the self-titled album "Els Blavets" (1993, available on Spotify). Concert appearances have taken the ensemble to Reims Cathedral (2017) and the Conservatori de Palma.
