Description
Bar Mónaco in the Llevant neighbourhood of Palma is a bar and tapas spot with a long history and an authentic Mallorcan character.
History and Character
In 1929, Miquel Bosch opened Café Mónaco — though the premises had previously been a cabaret run by a lady from Monaco, which is where the name comes from. Legend has it that the dressing rooms of the vedettes once sat above what is now the bar; during a renovation, costumes are said to have been discovered in crates. Over the course of the 20th century, the venue changed hands several times and today belongs to the Punxuat group. The interior keeps the spirit of that long history very much alive: the atmosphere is genuine, the style unmistakably old-school Spanish-Mallorcan.
What's on Offer
The menu features classic Mallorcan and Spanish dishes: tapas, llonguets, calamari sandwiches, croquettes, patatas bravas, mixed sharing plates (variats) and pa amb oli. Breakfast brings croissants and bocadillos. A lunchtime menu is also available, though the kitchen is not always fully staffed, so not every dish may be on offer at all times.
Location
Bar Mónaco is situated at Carrer Patronat Obrer 15 in the Llevant neighbourhood of Palma.
Terrace and General Set-Up
Alongside the indoor space, there is a terrace. The venue tends to be well frequented, particularly at lunchtime and in the evening. Take-away is available.
