Simple food, fair prices

Café Moderno keeps things straightforward with unpretentious, home-cooked Spanish food: Tortilla Española, tapas, calamares, albóndigas and crema catalana all feature on the menu. The set daily menu — starter, main and dessert — offers genuinely good value. If you just fancy a Café Americano, you're equally well catered for, with drinks priced very reasonably.

On the Plaça de Santa Eulàlia

The café sits right on the Plaça de Santa Eulàlia in the city centre, at number 5 on the square. It's close to the Church of Santa Eulàlia and, despite being bang in the middle of the old town, noticeably quieter than many of the surrounding tourist streets. Easy to reach on foot or by public transport; parking in the old town is limited.

A terrace under the trees

The real draw here is the outdoor terrace on the square: tables shaded by trees and parasols, cold drinks and a pleasantly unhurried pace. Inside, the dining room is traditionally decorated. The atmosphere on the square is calm and makes it easy to linger.
