Description
Es Baluard is Palma's museum of contemporary art, housed in a building that weaves together the city's historic Renaissance fortifications with striking modern architecture.
Architecture Between Bastion and Present Day
The museum is integrated into Palma's Renaissance city walls — the new building grows out of the historic stonework, binding both eras into a seamless spatial experience. Ramps, balconies and galleries connect the three levels, while skylights flood the generously proportioned exhibition rooms with natural light. It is this dialogue between old and new that makes the building itself part of the conversation.
Collection and Exhibitions
The collection spans over 800 works of contemporary art, including pieces with a strong connection to the island as well as works by Joan Miró. The museum sees itself as a centre for contemporary creativity in the Balearics — a space for critical, educational and community-driven engagement with art. Alongside the permanent collection, rotating exhibitions are on show throughout the year, and the museum garden displays sculpture in the open air.
Rooftop Terrace and Views
From the rooftop terrace and the walkable sections of the old city wall, you're treated to a sweeping panorama across Palma, the harbour and the bay. This vantage point is a destination in its own right, entirely independent of how you feel about contemporary art. The café's outdoor terrace shares the same spectacular outlook.
Location and Getting There
The museum is located at Plaça de la Porta de Santa Catalina 10 in the Centre neighbourhood, 07012 Palma. Bus routes 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 20, 40, 46 and 47, as well as the tourist bus, all stop nearby. Car parks can be found at Passeig Mallorca (around two minutes on foot), Via Roma (around five minutes) and Parc de la Mar (around ten minutes).
Who Will Enjoy a Visit
The museum is officially designated as family-friendly and is fully accessible. Even if contemporary art isn't quite your thing, the building itself and the terrace make it well worth the trip. For art lovers, the combination of permanent collection, rotating exhibitions and outdoor sculpture offers plenty to get stuck into.
