Description
The Far de Llebeig is a historic lighthouse perched on a sheer cliff at the southern tip of Sa Dragonera island, reachable on foot from the island's harbour.
A lighthouse at the edge of the island
The Far de Llebeig was designed by Eusebi Estada and inaugurated in 1910, replacing the older Na Pòpia lighthouse that once stood at the island's highest point. The building itself is closed to visitors — neither the lighthouse nor the watchtower can be entered. The setting, however, is well worth the journey: the lighthouse marks the final light guiding ships along their route towards the eastern coast of the Spanish mainland.
Getting there
From the island's harbour, a well-maintained tarmac path winds across the slopes of Na Pòpia and Puig des Aucells all the way to the lighthouse at the western end of Sa Dragonera — a distance of 4.5 kilometres. Allow around three hours for the return walk. Throughout the route, the path offers stunning views of the Mallorcan coastline. Shade is sparse along the way, so do come prepared. The island is not suitable for wheelchair users.
Lizards and breathtaking views
All along the path and around the lighthouse, you'll spot plenty of Sargantanes balears — the island's endemic lizards. The views from the clifftop plateau where the lighthouse stands are nothing short of spectacular. A picnic in the shade before heading back is a fine way to round off the trip.
