Little Brunch Mallorca sits at Balneario 13 on the Playa de Palma, right behind the beach promenade, and does exactly one thing there: breakfast, brunch and a light lunch — all day long. No evening trade, no menu trying to be everything at once. A house that takes the morning seriously and stretches it into the afternoon. The view is part of the concept. The place makes a point of the fact that you can see the sea from every seat, and the terrace comes with shade. It opens every day of the year — on the Playa de Palma, where shutters stay down in rows through the winter, that is not a given. The kitchen has a German root that it neither hides nor inflates into folklore. The breakfast rolls are expressly German rolls, and what goes on top of them is rarely found on the island in quite this form. What comes to the table The rolls are the core of the menu. There is the original with Zwiebelmett, raw minced pork and spring onions; a house-made roast beef, cooked pink, with an equally house-made rémoulade; smoked salmon with the same rémoulade; a caprese with buffalo mozzarella, tomato slices and pesto; and the plain version with ham and cheese. The club breaks ranks and arrives on toast, with Gouda, guacamole, a fried egg and cucumber. Among the hot breakfasts, scrambled egg takes the lead, with spring onions, tomato concassé and chives. The Vital Breakfast swaps the toast for German wholegrain bread and puts guacamole alongside. The most elaborate item is the Tostada Benedict: guacamole, tomato, Gouda, a fried egg and hollandaise on toast, with a small salad in a house honey-mustard vinaigrette. Lighter going is the Breakfast Bowl of Greek yoghurt, oat granola, fresh fruit salad, blueberries and honey. Fruit salad and yoghurt with fruit are also listed on their own — fresh fruit here is not a garnish but a section of its own. At midday two salads join in: a Caesar with romaine, grated Parmesan, croutons and a house dressing made up vegetarian, and a mixed salad with goat cheese gratinated under cane sugar. The same technique gives the buffalo mozzarella of the caprese starter its caramelised crust — a small signature that runs through the menu. Walnuts, peppers, cucumber and the honey-mustard vinaigrette again come with it. There is also a Mediterranean starter of baguette, olives, guacamole, house feta cream and Serrano ham. Coffee is treated as a discipline in its own right, and the house calls it specialty coffee outright. It is small, and you book through the reservation system the place itself points to — on a sunny morning that is not a superfluous step. If you would rather not stay, the same food goes in a bag, and delivery is available too. For a breakfast by the beach that does not come off a hotel buffet, both are useful. Who the place suits Vegetarian is no footnote here. There is a Green Brunch of its own, the Caesar dressing is made up vegetarian, and between the rolls, bowls and salads a full meat-free breakfast assembles itself without effort. Gluten-free dishes are marked separately. For children there is a small menu of their own with sweet and savoury options — handy while the rest of the family works through scrambled eggs and roast beef. And because larger brunch formats sit on the menu alongside the single breakfast, the house works for a quick coffee after a walk on the beach just as well as for a long morning for four.
