Necròpolis de Son Real
Description
The Necròpolis de Son Real is a prehistoric burial ground on Mallorca, situated right on the coastline near Punta des Fenicis and dating back to the 7th century BC.
A burial ground by the sea
On the headland of Punta des Fenicis lie the remains of one of Mallorca's most remarkable archaeological sites. The Necròpolis de Son Real comprises more than 100 graves constructed from large stone slabs, some of which date as far back as the Iron Age. The site was in use for centuries, right through into the Roman period. Its position directly on the coast gives the place a truly special atmosphere — coastal landscape and archaeological heritage intertwined in a remarkably small space.
Well interpreted on the ground
A circular path winds between the graves, lined with multilingual information boards explaining the history of the necropolis, the finds uncovered, and the excavations carried out. The signage makes it clear which paths you can walk along and where access is restricted.
Location and getting there
The necropolis is located at Punta des Fenicis (07450). The car park at Finca Son Real is the usual starting point, from which several paths lead through a nature reserve down to the coast and the burial site. Part of the route crosses sandy terrain, so sturdy footwear is recommended. The site can also be reached on foot from the beach at Platja de Son Bauló.
Nature along the way
The walk to the necropolis takes you through a natural park. Along the route you may spot Hermann's tortoises, birds, and other wildlife — something that families with children tend to particularly enjoy. In spring, wild orchids line the path.
