Ohana Poke & Ice Cream Mallorca

Ohana Poke & Ice Cream Mallorca sits on the Carretera de l'Arenal, the beach road of Platja de Palma, roughly halfway between Can Pastilla and s'Arenal. The name comes from Hawaiian and means family. That is exactly how the house runs: as a family business with a menu built around Hawaiian poke bowls, and around those, everything a place right on the beachfront needs. You order from fixed recipes rather than along a counter full of tubs. Every bowl appears on the menu with its complete make-up, comes in two sizes, and is built on sushi rice, quinoa or salad. If you like, you add an extra portion of protein or more mango and avocado. The six poke bowls The salmon bowl brings sushi rice together with salmon, avocado, radish, mango, cucumber, wakame, sesame and chia seeds and a teriyaki sauce. The tuna version takes a sharper line: carrot, cucumber, radish, avocado, edamame and spring onion, with a spicy mayo. The prawn bowl gathers carrot, edamame, cucumber, avocado and pineapple, again with spicy mayo. The chicken bowl pulls in a sweeter direction, with pineapple, avocado, spring onion, cherry tomato, cashew nuts and teriyaki. Two bowls are vegan: one with tofu, cucumber, radish, avocado and mango, a second with Heura, plus avocado, mango, cucumber, edamame and carrot. Both are finished with sesame, chia and teriyaki. Breakfast, smoothie bowls and the savoury side Ahead of the bowls comes a breakfast and snack list. Crêpes and waffles run in both directions — savoury with cheese, serrano and rocket or with tuna, cheese, sweetcorn and balsamic, sweet with hazelnut chocolate spread, fresh fruit, chocolate sauce, cream, walnuts or a scoop of ice cream. The three smoothie bowls are entirely plant-based: strawberry and banana, mango, and banana and coconut, built on banana, peanut butter and almond or coconut yoghurt, topped with pineapple, kiwi, blueberries, chia seeds and nuts. The savoury side carries on with baguettes — smoked salmon with avocado, a Cuban-inspired one with pork loin, ham, pickle and cheddar, plus a vegan version and one with serrano, on gluten-free bread if you prefer. The tapas run from gambas al ajillo through champiñones al ajillo and patatas bravas to nachos with home-made guacamole and a mixed platter of cold cuts, cheese and Spanish omelette. Among the salads there is a caprese, a Greek one with feta and black olives, and the house salad with chicken, strawberries, walnuts and Grana Padano. Then come pasta and pizza, a chicken curry and a beef stew, both with rice and salad. Ice cream, cakes and drinks at Ohana Poke & Ice Cream Mallorca The second half of the name is meant literally. The ice cream list carries chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, stracciatella, lemon, pistachio, coconut and mint, along with ready-composed sundaes: a banana split, a stracciatella combination with pistachio and chocolate, and a version with mint liqueur. Among the cakes, the one made from apple, pear and blackberry is vegan and lactose-free and the carrot cake is gluten-free; alongside them sit an Oreo cake and one of white chocolate with pistachio. The drinks are what a beach day calls for: freshly pressed juices of orange, carrot and beetroot or of pineapple and melon, five smoothies, milkshakes and a full coffee list with affogato, iced coffee, latte macchiato and matcha latte. Then beer on draught and by the bottle, sangría including a cava version, and cocktails from mojito and caipirinha to Blue Hawaii and piña colada. Who the place suits Ohana is built for a day at the beach: breakfast before the first swim, a bowl in between, an ice cream on the way back. Outside you sit right on the promenade. Families get a small children's menu with a mini poke or macaroni and a dessert, and anyone eating vegan or gluten-free finds more here than the usual token dish.
