Description

The Santuari de Sant Salvador is a fortified church perched on a hill above Artà in north-east Mallorca — a church, historic sanctuary and viewpoint all rolled into one.

Fortress, Church and Viewpoint

The Santuari de Sant Salvador brings together a church and martial architecture: walls, towers, battlements and walkways define the character of the site. The sanctuary dates back to the 14th century. Inside you'll find sacred works of art, vestments, paintings and statues, alongside a small exhibition. The complex is well preserved and forms one of the most striking silhouettes in the Llevant region.

The View

The sweeping panorama over Artà, the surrounding countryside and the mountains is the highlight of any visit. On a clear day the view stretches all the way to the coast. You can take it all in from the battlements — and the climb up the stone steps is very much part of the experience.

Refreshments in the Courtyard

There's a self-service café in the inner courtyard serving tapas, snacks and drinks at reasonable prices. It's also a great pit stop for cyclists who've made it up the hill.

Location and Getting There

The site sits on a hill directly above the town of Artà (07570). It's walkable from the town centre, though the ascent is a solid workout. If you're driving, free parking is available right by the entrance. Please note that the monastery grounds are only partially accessible by wheelchair.
