Description

Ses Païsses is a prehistoric Talayotic settlement and archaeological site near Artà in the north-east of Mallorca.

Ruins thousands of years in the making

The settlement of Ses Païsses dates back to around 850 BC and belongs to the Iron Age Talayotic culture. It grew outwards from a circular talayot, around which dwelling and ritual spaces gradually took shape. Later, a double-walled cyclopean enclosure of enormous stone blocks was built to surround the entire site — this monument of massive boulders survives to this day and defines the character of the place. Wandering through the grounds gives you a very real sense of what was being built and lived in on Mallorca more than 3,000 years ago.

Guided trail and signage

A signposted circular trail leads through the excavated site. Illustrated information panels explain the history of the settlement, with labelling in Catalan, Spanish and English; a German-language version is available via QR code. The path runs on uneven, unpaved ground and is not wheelchair accessible. A map marking each stop along the route is handed out at the entrance.

Location and getting there

The site is located at Lloc Polígon 13, 113, just outside Artà. Parking is available on site, though the access road is on the rough side. There are toilets within the grounds.

Atmosphere

The trail winds through the site in the shade of trees, lending the whole visit a calm and unhurried feel. The grounds are rarely crowded, even outside peak season — a welcome contrast to the bustle of other attractions across Mallorca. Children are very welcome; the illustrations and clear signage make the site accessible and engaging for younger visitors too.

What languages are the information panels available in?
On-site panels are in Catalan, Spanish and English. A German-language version can be accessed via QR code.
