Description
Studio Weil in Port d'Andratx is a cultural centre conceived by American painter and sculptor Barbara Weil together with architect Daniel Libeskind as a painting and sculpture studio.
Art and Architecture Under One Roof
The building was designed by Studio Libeskind for Barbara Weil and serves as a space for artistic creation and exhibition. Libeskind's architecture is consistently striking — spectacular yet harmonious — and Weil's works are deeply woven into the fabric of the building itself. This union of contemporary architecture and fine art is at the very heart of the place, and the interior and curatorial work leave a lasting impression.
Barbara Weil and the Studio's Legacy
Barbara Weil (Chicago 1933 – Port d'Andratx 2018) created the studio as a home for her painting and sculpture. Today the house is run by her sons. Alongside the permanent collection, changing exhibitions take place — including a show featuring the finalists of the Barbara H. Weil Award 2022. The studio also hosts jazz concerts, where the calibre of the musicians is every bit as noteworthy as the extraordinary setting.
On the Harbour of Port d'Andratx
Studio Weil is located at Camí Sant Carles 20 in Port d'Andratx, right on the harbour, though set slightly away from the centre. Its position on the natural harbour contributes greatly to the unique atmosphere of the place.
Visiting and Reception
The welcome is personal and warm: visitors receive a brief introduction from members of the family or the team. If you're planning a visit, it's worth getting in touch in advance, as access is partly by appointment. The studio also features in the Michael Müller Mallorca travel guide.
