Palma Nova beach, Mallorca

Palma Nova, known in Catalan as Platja de Palmanova and also referred to as Cala Blanca, is a wide sandy beach fully integrated into the holiday resort in southwest Mallorca. Between Punta Nadala and es Carregador, fine white sand meets a promenade lined with hotels, restaurants, bars and shops. What distinguishes this beach from smaller coves is its combination of generous space, easy access and extensive tourist infrastructure. Peace and seclusion in nature are not the main focus here—but a beach day requires little advance planning.

Together with Son Maties and es Carregador, Palma Nova forms the beach ensemble of the holiday resort of the same name in the municipality of Calvià. In everyday use, the name Palmanova often refers to the entire sweep of coastline, which is why size figures vary depending on how the area is defined. Where is Palma Nova beach and what is it like?

Palma Nova is located in the tourist-oriented coastal resort of Palmanova in the municipality of Calvià, around 20 kilometres from the centre of Palma. The setting is distinctly urban. Behind the sand, holiday accommodation, restaurants, shops and nightlife venues dominate the scene. Today, the resort is one of Calvià’s established tourist centres.

Palma Nova should not be confused with the holiday resort’s entire sweep of coastline. From east to west, the beaches here are es Carregador, Palma Nova and Son Maties. How do you get to Palma Nova?

Palma Nova is easy to reach by car and public bus. According to the local hotel association, it is approximately 20 kilometres from the centre of Palma and around 29 kilometres from Son Sant Joan Airport.

From the airport, first follow the signs towards Palma and then take the Ma-20 towards Andratx. At exit 11A, change to the Ma-1 towards Palmanova and Andratx. Exit 13 then leads to Calvià and Palmanova. Alternatively, you can take exit 14 towards Magaluf and El Toro. The beach is signposted within the resort.

Depending on traffic, the journey from Palma takes approximately 20 to 25 minutes. Without a car, you can take bus line 104 from Estació Intermodal in central Palma. The stated journey time is about 30 to 40 minutes, and there is a stop very close to the beach.

With its beachside restaurants, shops and accommodation, Palmanova itself offers plenty of amenities within a short distance. If your stay is primarily focused on the resort and its three beaches, a beach day can therefore easily be organised by bus.

Where can you park at Palma Nova beach?

Free parking is available in the surrounding streets and in designated parking areas within the resort. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue describes access by car as easy and explicitly mentions free parking around the beach.

During the summer months, however, finding a space may require patience. Several travel guides point out that free spaces are harder to find then, despite the availability of on-street parking and designated parking areas. This is consistent with the beach’s officially recorded high seasonal occupancy.

If you visit on a particularly busy day, arriving earlier is the more practical option. Always pay attention to road markings and signs: the general statement that free parking is available does not mean that every space throughout the resort can be used without restrictions.

Caution: Do not confuse Palmanova with the urban area of Palma. The parking rules of the island’s capital cannot automatically be applied to the streets around this beach.

The bus is a particularly useful alternative if you are travelling from Palma and do not want to search for a free space in the resort. The stop near the beach also avoids a long walk from the edge of town.

What are the sand, water and swimming conditions like?

Palma Nova has fine, light-coloured sand and usually clear water that is generally used for swimming and water sports. The beach’s current character is the result of artificial sand regeneration, during which fine white sand was added.

Caution: When swimming, do not rely solely on the bay’s generally sheltered appearance. Follow the flags and the instructions given by lifeguards on the day.

Palma Nova is also mentioned as a place for snorkelling and diving because of the underwater visibility. At the same time, the bay is not a quiet natural area: depending on the season, private boats and commercial excursion boats create activity on the water.

What facilities are available?

Palma Nova offers sun loungers and parasols for hire, showers, toilets, accessible entry and seasonal lifeguard supervision. Behind the beach is a promenade with numerous restaurants, cafés, bars and shops.

The food and drink options range from Mediterranean to international cuisine. Several venues are located directly on the promenade or offer views of the water. There are also shops selling beach supplies, inflatable water toys, buckets and spades, as well as souvenirs. Prices and opening hours depend on the operator and season.

Some descriptions of the beach area also mention small playgrounds and shaded lawns behind the central section. Natural shade directly on the open sand, however, cannot be taken for granted. If you want a permanent shaded spot, you will be better prepared with a rented parasol or your own suitable beach shade.

Is Palma Nova suitable for families with children?

The main advantage for families is convenience: food, drinks and beach supplies are available nearby, and the walk from the bus stop or surrounding streets is short. The beach is often described as a family-oriented destination, and the water is generally considered suitable for swimming.

However, Palma Nova is very busy during the season. Families with small children who want a better overview from their spot on the sand should avoid the busiest times of day. Water sports and boat traffic also form part of the bay’s overall character. Regardless of lifeguard supervision and weather conditions, children should therefore always be supervised closely.

Do not assume that the water remains particularly shallow for a long distance everywhere. Make your decision based on local conditions and your child’s swimming ability. Flags and lifeguard instructions take priority.

For breaks away from the sand, the lawns and playgrounds mentioned above are possible options. As these facilities are sometimes listed for the entire beach ensemble, their distance from your chosen spot may vary.

When is the best time to visit Palma Nova, and how crowded does it get?

If you prefer fewer crowds, April to June and September and October are the better periods. A local beach hotel describes these months as quieter than the main season, while May to September is considered the resort’s peak tourist period.

Expect many visitors in summer. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue classifies seasonal occupancy as high and notes that Palma Nova attracts numerous local bathers as well as holidaymakers. Although the wide sandy area provides space, it does not prevent rows of loungers, access points, the promenade and parking facilities from becoming heavily used.

If you visit in the middle of summer, careful timing can help: arriving earlier makes it easier to find parking and choose a spot on the beach. Outside the main season, the atmosphere is quieter, although some tourist services and water sports may be limited.

Palma Nova remains a lively holiday resort beyond the beach itself. Bars, restaurants, sports bars, pubs, karaoke venues and places with music are all part of its tourist infrastructure. If a secluded beach day in unspoilt natural surroundings is important to you, the resort is therefore unlikely to meet that expectation. If you prefer short distances and plenty of amenities around the sand, Palma Nova plays to its strengths.

What is near Palma Nova?

The beaches of es Carregador and Son Maties are directly adjacent, while the bay and beach of Magaluf are also within walking distance. This allows you to compare several beach sections without needing a car for every change of location.

Es Carregador forms the eastern part of the resort, Palma Nova lies in the centre and Son Maties is farther west. A beach guide gives es Carregador a length of 600 metres and a depth of 60 metres, while Son Maties is listed as 1.200 metres long and 100 metres deep. These figures refer to other beach sections and cannot be applied to the officially defined Palma Nova beach.

Son Maties is described as having several bars behind the beach. Magaluf adjoins Palmanova and offers its own combination of beaches and nightlife. Farther afield, water parks, miniature golf and a marine zoo are mentioned as family-oriented excursion destinations.

Other coastal resorts in the municipality of Calvià lie to the west, including Santa Ponça and Peguera; Andratx is also mentioned as a destination in the southwest. For a spontaneous change during the same beach day, however, es Carregador and Son Maties are the most practical choices because they belong to Palmanova’s continuous beach area.

Historically, it is interesting that the present-day development was built on former land belonging to the Possessió de ses Planes. The holiday resort is therefore not an old fishing village with a small harbour but a residential area developed from 1934 onwards that later became a tourist destination.

What practical information should you know before your beach day?

At Palma Nova, you should primarily expect high summer occupancy, little reliable natural shade and services that depend on the season. Sun protection, drinking water and checking the current flags are therefore sensible parts of your preparation.

Sun loungers and parasols are available for hire, but prices may vary depending on the operator and season. Lifeguard services and water sports are also concentrated in the tourist season. If you visit outside the main months, do not assume that every facility or activity will be available.

For dogs, follow the signs at the beach entrances. Seasonal restrictions are possible, especially during summer at heavily visited bathing beaches.

It is open from northeast to east; the seabed consists of sand and is three to five metres deep there. Palma Nova is particularly suitable for an uncomplicated beach day if you value restaurants, toilets, showers and transport connections directly by the beach. If you want peace, an undeveloped coastline and plenty of natural shade, choose a beach with a different character.
