Llonguet bread roll
The specialty of Mallorca's capital
Many places have their very own specialty. And of course Palma, Mallorca's beautiful capital, is not to be outdone. Because Palma has its Llonguets. These are delicious sandwiches that are served cold or gratinated in a bag or on a plate. The crispy pieces with the typical longitudinal notch in the middle are genuine.
Ruta del Llonguet on wednesdays
Autumn is always the time for the Llonguet route. During the "Ruta del Llonguet" on Wednesdays, numerous bakeries in the Mediterranean metropolis offer the crispy snack in a wide range of variations. This year, 30 forns and pastisseries in Palma are taking part. Until December 13, you can get a Llonguet and a drink for 3.75 euros every Wednesday.
Stable price
Despite inflation and high energy prices, the bakers have not increasedtheir prices compared to last year so that nobody has to miss out on the delicious rolls. And they are a little proud of that. The Llonguet tour was organized by the Association of Bakers and Confectioners of the Balearic Islands (Associació de Forners i Pastissers de les Illes Balears). The Palma Town Hall has supported them in this project.
Ham, cheese, grilled suckling pig
Llonguets are classically topped with cheese, ham or tuna. However, the Fornet de la Soca in the heart of the city, for example, has a particularly creative interior. There you will find grilled suckling pig with pomegranate jam and almonds on top. The typical Mallorcan paprika sausage sobrassada is also a popular choice, although here it is made from black pork.
Gluten-free or made from wholemeal flour
People with gluten intolerance don't have to miss out on the typical Palma delicacies. The Dulcelíaco bakery in the Santa Catalina district has catered precisely to this clientele. Pane Nostro bakery is the place to go for anyone who loves wholemeal. It uses wholemeal spelt flour for its longuets. At the wonderfully nostalgic Forn de la Glòria in Palma's old town, the bread rolls tempt with a topping of goat's cheese, guacamole and dried tomatoes or blue cheese with tomato jam ...
5,000 Llonguets per week
The figures from the bakers' association show just how popular the baked goods are. During the Ruta del Llonguet, 5,000 of them are sold every week! And it's not just the locals who have acquired a taste for them, but also holidaymakers who want to satisfy their hunger in between meals. This creates a lot of footfall in the stores and some visitors also take the opportunity to discover the other products on offer in the bakeries. This kills two birds with one stone, because good sales also mean good advertising in the best case scenario.
In bakeries and bars
Incidentally, Llonguets are not only available in bakeries, but also in many Mallorcan bars . For example, in the legendary Bar Bosch in the Plaza del Rey Juan Carlos I.
