PSOE Palma calls for Iris Cinema recovery in Palma
PSOE Palma on 17 August called on Palma City Council in Palma, Mallorca, to recover the Iris Cinema and the Son Gibert kiosk for the Vivero and Rafal Nou neighbourhoods. The party said the cinema is privately owned, while the kiosk belongs to the council.
The socialists accused Palma mayor Jaime Martínez of failing to address neighbourhood needs. They said the two sites could provide local services if brought back into public use.
In 2024, the council unanimously approved a motion proposing that it acquire the Iris Cinema building to extend El Vivero school, according to PSOE councillor Daniel Oliveira. He said the council did not make an offer and that the building subsequently passed into private ownership, despite its potential use for school expansion and public facilities.
PSOE said the Son Gibert kiosk has been shut for years, boarded up and damaged, with its condition continuing to deteriorate. Neighbourhood associations have proposed converting it into a sociocultural space, and the party urged the council to restore both sites for local residents.
