Machete chase in Palma ends with man arrested
Palma Local Police arrested a 50-year-old man from Togo after he allegedly chased a 46-year-old acquaintance with a machete in Palma, Mallorca, on 15 August. Officers intervened near Robert Graves Street after receiving reports of a dispute at the junction of Bellver Street and Joan Miró Street.
Police said several patrols, including officers from the Integrated Security Unit, initially searched the area without finding the men. They later saw them running along Robert Graves Street, with the suspect allegedly pursuing the other man while holding the weapon.
Weapon left on a rubbish container
According to police, the man stopped after patrol vehicles and arriving officers surrounded him, then placed the machete on a rubbish container. Both men were believed to be under the influence of alcohol or other substances when officers separated them.
The 46-year-old Senegalese man told police that the argument began inside the premises where both men sleep. He said he had asked the suspect to repay a debt, after which the other man produced the machete and chased him while making death threats.
Police reject suspect’s account
The detained man claimed that the other man had first pulled a knife. Police said the pursuit witnessed by officers did not support that account.
The suspect had a small bleeding cut to his chin, which officers believe may have been caused accidentally by the machete during the chase. Police said he made a further threat towards the other man while already under their control.
Palma Local Police handed the detainee and case file to the National Police for custody and presentation to the judicial authorities.
