Mallorca funds six municipal care homes with €5m
The Council of Mallorca will provide €5 million to cover the declared deficits of six municipal care homes in Artà, Mallorca, Campos, Llucmajor, Muro, Pollença and Santa Maria del Camí. The island authority announced the 2026 funding on 18 August in Palma.
The funding, administered through the Mallorca Institute of Social Affairs, follows six applications for help with the running and maintenance costs of public municipal residences. The Council of Mallorca said the allocation would meet the combined deficit reported by the six homes in full.
Larger 2026 allocation
The 2026 scheme has a budget of €5 million, €2 million more than the €3 million available when the dedicated grant line was introduced in 2025. The increase represents 66.7 per cent.
Llorenç Galmés, president of the Council of Mallorca, said the additional funding would give local councils greater scope to spend on other policies and services.
Support for 256 public places
Guillermo Sánchez, president of the Mallorca Institute of Social Affairs and the island councillor for social welfare, said the grants would provide financial stability for the six centres.
The funding is intended to safeguard the long-term viability of 256 public residential places and help older people remain in their own municipalities, close to family and established community ties.
