PSIB urges Balearic land policy reversal after protests
The PSIB opposition party has called on the Balearic Government to reverse its land policy in Palma, Mallorca, following protests over tourism pressure and development. In a statement issued on 19 August 2026, socialist MP Mercedes Garrido said the administration’s approach was damaging the islands’ territory and coastline.
Garrido pointed to two major demonstrations held during the summer: a human chain at Es Trenc, Mallorca, and a protest in Palma at the end of July. She said both actions conveyed opposition to development affecting the land and coast of Mallorca, Menorca, Eivissa and Formentera.
The PSIB urged the regional executive and the Partido Popular to change course, alleging that their policies favour speculators and overseas investors rather than the public interest. Garrido also accused the Partido Popular government led by President Prohens of altering a ministry order through legislation because it could not have followed the normal procedure without the required reports.
According to the PSIB, the government has enabled unchecked construction instead of strengthening protection for the territory, while placing excessive pressure on natural resources. Garrido cited rules concerning the beach ‘xibius’ as another case in which regulations had been changed to suit particular interests, and said the Partido Popular’s actions conflicted with its public statements.
