Santa Isabel Monastery ownership confirmed in Palma

Marga Prohens, president of the Balearic Government, visited Santa Isabel Monastery in Palma, Mallorca, on Wednesday, 19 August 2026, praising the Jerónimas for preserving the convent through generations. The visit followed a Supreme Court decision that left the sisters’ ownership of the building intact after a long-running dispute with the Diocese of Mallorca.

Prohens toured the convent, also known as Sant Jeroni, with the Minister for Families, Social Welfare and Dependency Care. She described the monastery as part of the islands’ heritage and said protecting history helps pass it on to future generations.

The dispute centred on competing ownership claims by the diocese and the Jerónimas. A Provincial Court ruling recognised the sisters as owners of the property in Palma’s historic centre, and the Supreme Court recently declined to admit the diocese’s cassation appeal.

Following the court outcome, the Federation of Monasteries of the Jerónimas of Santa Paula began assessing the future use of the site. The review will seek to retain its religious character wherever possible.
