TetraIB emergency network coverage reaches 91.2% in Mallorca
TetraIB emergency network coverage in Mallorca, Balearic Islands, has risen to 91.2% after 16 new antennas were installed, the Balearic Government said in Palma on 18 August. The upgrade is intended to strengthen communications for emergency and security services during major incidents.
Outdoor coverage in populated areas now stands at 99%, while coverage inside buildings has reached 95%. The network supports local police forces, the 112 emergency service, health teams, firefighters, civil protection services and the Balearic Institute of Nature, Ibanat.
Expansion plan and mobile stations
The Government launched the expansion of the TetraIB and IoTIB networks with an initial investment of €12.4 million, co-financed through European Regional Development Fund resources for 2021-2027.
Three portable communications stations have also entered service. They can be deployed to provide coverage anywhere in the Balearic Islands during an emergency.
Fewer antennas, stronger signal
Officials said the improved reach has been achieved with fewer antennas than originally planned. The new equipment has greater power, while the chosen sites provide more effective coverage, particularly in inhabited areas and locations where terrain can obstruct radio signals.
The strengthened network is also seen as important for preparations for severe weather. Under the Inunbal flood-risk plan, reliable communications are needed to keep emergency bodies coordinated during flooding.
