You're standing in front of a plain wooden door in a narrow alley in Palma's old town. No sign, no neon, hardly a hint of what lies beyond. Then the heavy gate swings open — and everything changes in an instant: the entrance floor is covered in fresh oranges, pomegranates and grapes, the air carries the sweet fragrance of ripe fruit and fresh flowers, somewhere a fountain trickles, and classical music drifts from the courtyard through the archway like a fog. This is Bar Ábaco — one of the world's most theatrical bars since 1981.
Concept
Can Marcel, the 17th-century manor house at Carrer de Sant Joan 1, was once a noble palace. The ground floor — around eight metres high, once stables for horses and carriages, still recognisable from the wide arched gateway — gives the courtyard its dramatic proportions. Since 1981, this meticulously restored building has housed a cocktail bar that deliberately positions itself beyond all fashion: no DJ booth, no dance floor, no lifestyle label. Just setting. Just experience. The Financial Times once called Ábaco “surely the most remarkable bar in the world” — and anyone who has taken their first step into this courtyard understands why.
Atmosphere
The central courtyard is stage and bar in one. Candles flicker, fountains trickle, classical music hangs in the air as an almost imperceptible layer of sound. On the walls: antique furniture, gilded Rococo mirrors, large-format paintings, surrealist artworks, Mallorcan tapestries, hand-painted ceramics. Heavy wooden beams span the ceiling, a large open fireplace draws the eye — and everywhere fresh fruit arrangements of oranges, grapes and pomegranates, draped like Flemish still lifes: decoration and olfactory signal in one.
You really should climb the stairs to the upper floor. There, elegant salons open up with original furniture from the aristocratic era — almost like a small private museum. Anyone who doesn't enter these rooms has seen only half the bar. On the façade, sphinx figures are said to have had their female features reduced to conform to the moral standards of the time — a piece of local lore that fits the contradictions of this place perfectly.
On certain evenings, rose petals rain down from the balcony onto guests in the courtyard — a surprise that cannot be planned, not consistently practised, but very much part of the legend of Ábaco.
Drinks
The offering includes signature and classic cocktails as well as a curated selection of Champagne and premium spirits, made with fresh, high-quality ingredients. Beyond cocktails, the menu also includes cava, coffee, wine and sweet treats. Specific cocktail names are not publicly documented. Guest reviews of the drinks are honestly divided: some praise them as creative and carefully crafted, others find quality and price out of step. Bar Ábaco is not a craft cocktail laboratory — ordering a drink here is primarily buying atmosphere, classical music and a setting that has no equal anywhere in the world. If that's exactly what you want, you're making the right bargain.
For whom & what occasions
The most romantic drink of the holiday. A special evening for two. The unforgettable first impression for architecture and history enthusiasts who want to experience an intact Mallorcan noble palace from the inside. Tourists and locals visit Ábaco alike — as a counterpoint to the average beach holiday, as a talking point, as proof that Palma has more to offer than sun-umbrella gastronomy. The price level is premium. For a long drinking evening with multiple rounds it may not be the most natural fit — as a deliberate experience stop, it is unmatched.
Insider tip
Come in the early evening, when the courtyard slowly fills and the bar truly comes alive. If you want a seat: you'll get one faster at the bar itself than waiting for a table. Reservations are generally not accepted. The entrance is step-free accessible, though there's one step to watch for right at the door. Definitely take the stairs to the upper floor — the original aristocratic salons are a reason to visit in their own right. Photography inside is officially restricted; the staff takes it seriously.
