Conflict over Cort: Podemos sees double standard in Palma

A dispute has erupted in Palma over the Plaza de Cort: Podemos accuses mayor Jaime Martínez of applying a double standard to the use of the square. The immediate cause is his call for a solidarity gathering for Ceuta on 2 September at the Plaza de Cort in Palma. Councillor Lucía Muñoz says that citizens' initiatives apparently face different standards than an event supported by the mayor.

Dispute over a „sopar a la fresca“

A few weeks ago, according to Muñoz, the city council rejected one of the „sopars a la fresca“ planned by the organisation Brunzzit. The reason given was that too many events were already being held at the Plaza de Cort.

Muñoz now criticises the fact that this reasoning does not match the mayor's call for the gathering on 2 September. If the square is overcrowded, that should apply regardless of who calls an event, she said.

Criticism of gathering for Ceuta

The Podemos councillor also accuses Martínez of using the solidarity gathering for Ceuta for party-political purposes. According to her, he links the events in the autonomous city to the arrival of migrants on the islands, thereby attacking the government.

Muñoz calls for transparent rules that apply equally to everyone when using public spaces. Neither the Plaza de Cort nor the town hall belongs to the mayor, but to all citizens, she said.
