Registering as a job seeker with SOIB in Mallorca: registration, Cita Previa & Renovación
Anyone who loses their job in Mallorca must first register as a jobseeker with the SOIB (Servei d'Ocupació de les Illes Balears) before it's even possible to apply for unemployment benefit with the state SEPE. This sequence is underestimated by many newcomers – and a missed step can delay the entire benefit. This guide explains how to register as a jobseeker with SOIB, who actually needs to register, how to get an appointment (Cita Previa), which documents you need and how the regular renewal of your Demanda (Renovación) works. What is SOIB and why do you need to register there?
SOIB is the regional employment service of the Balearic Islands and falls under the Govern de les Illes Balears. It is responsible for registering jobseekers, job placement, career guidance and coordination with the state SEPE when it comes to unemployment benefits. Without a valid registration with SOIB as a "persona demandante de empleo", you won't receive any benefit payment from SEPE – registration with SOIB is legally the prerequisite for this.
The legal basis is Ley 3/2023, de 28 de febrero, de Empleo, supplemented by Real Decreto 438/2024, which regulates the deadlines for registration and access to benefits. For non-EU foreigners, Orden TAS/3698/2006 also applies, which sets out the registration of foreign workers with public employment services.
Note: Registration with SOIB is basically free and voluntary. It only becomes mandatory for people who receive an unemployment benefit or Subsidio.
Who needs to register with SOIB – and who doesn't
Not everyone who becomes unemployed necessarily has to go to SOIB. But anyone who wants to apply for unemployment benefit (Paro) later cannot avoid prior registration. Those who already have a job can also register voluntarily, for example to gain access to training courses or placement services.

Please note: If, as a non-EU citizen, you do not yet hold a valid work permit, or your residence/work permit needs to be renewed, you will in any case need a Cita Previa in person – the automatic online registration does not apply in this case.
Deadlines: How quickly do you need to register?
For the pure registration as a jobseeker there is formally no fixed exclusion deadline – in theory you can register at any time. What matters, however, is this: if you want access to a benefit or a Subsidio in case of unemployment, the registration must take place within the deadlines set for the benefit application (Art. 39 Real Decreto 438/2024). In practice this means: register as soon as possible after your contract ends.

Cita Previa with SOIB: how to get your appointment
For first registration, changes to your personal or professional details, as well as for vocational guidance, you will generally need a Cita Previa. There are several ways to get an appointment.

Note: If you want to apply for a benefit or Subsidio at the SEPE, register with the SOIB first – only afterwards does a Cita Previa at the SEPE (www.sepe.es/citaprevia) make sense.
Between 13.10.2025 and 31.01.2026, a temporary simplification applied at the SOIB: anyone who submitted the PREsolicitud de prestación/subsidio directly to the SEPE during this period was automatically registered with the SOIB and no longer needed to book their own Cita Previa – except in the case of a first-time registration or if the residence/work permit had not been renewed. You should check in advance on soib.es or by phone on 971 225 791 or 012 whether this simplification is still in effect.
Registration step by step: first-time registration
- Arrange an appointment: Book a Cita Previa online, via the app, or by phone (see table above).
- Gather documents: DNI/NIE, work permit if applicable, proof of training/qualifications, driving licence (see next section).
- Go to the SOIB office: The very first registration as a Demandante must be done in person at a SOIB office – this is not possible purely online.
- Have the form filled in: On site, your personal details, desired occupations, education and work experience are recorded.
- Receive the DARDE: You will receive the document for updating and renewing the Demanda (DARDE), with the next renewal dates.
- Create a user account: For later online procedures, go to "En un clic" → "Trámites en línea" → "Gestión de usuarios" → "Alta de nuevo usuario", enter your DNI/NIE and choose a username; the provisional password will be sent by SMS.
- Keep your contact details up to date: Your mobile number, email and address must be current so that you receive notifications.
- Note down renewal dates: From now on, you must renew your Demanda regularly (see below).
Which documents you need to bring
The list of documents depends on your personal situation, but the core structure is always similar.

There are several SOIB locations on Mallorca. The main office is in Palma; for the exact address of your nearest office, it's best to use the office finder on soib.es, as opening hours may vary slightly depending on location.

Note: The usual opening hours for in-person visits without an appointment are Monday to Friday from 9am to 2pm, except on public holidays.
Renovación: Renew your Demanda regularly
After the initial registration, a single visit to the authorities isn't enough. Your Demanda must be regularly renewed ("renovada") on the dates specified in the DARDE – this is especially important if you're receiving a benefit or a Subsidio, as in that case the Renovación is mandatory.

Attention: Online renewal is unavailable daily between 1:00 and 2:00am due to maintenance work. Plan your appointment accordingly.
If you haven't yet updated your mobile number in the SOIB system, telephone renewal won't work reliably – in this case, book a Cita Previa at your office first to correct the details.
SOIB and SEPE: How the two authorities work together
In Mallorca and the Balearic Islands, there are two separate authorities that are often confused: SOIB is the regional employment agency and your first mandatory point of contact, while SEPE (Servicio Público de Empleo Estatal) is the national authority responsible for calculating and paying out unemployment benefit. Without a valid SOIB registration, nothing works at SEPE – conversely, you can register with SOIB without ever filing an application with SEPE, for example if you only want access to courses or job placement.

Many problems arise not from a lack of eligibility, but from avoidable formal errors.

What comes next? Courses, job placement, guidance
Once your Demanda is active, the SOIB gives you access to further services: individual career counselling, group workshops on job searching, as well as public and private job offers. An active Demanda is always required for guidance appointments and workshops – if your registration has not yet been completed or has expired, you must first take care of the "Demandas" section.
If you find a new job, your Demanda is automatically deactivated (Baja). You can reactivate it at any time afterwards, regardless of whether you are working or not – re-registering is worthwhile, for example, to continue having access to free SOIB courses. Note: Even with an existing employment contract, voluntary SOIB registration is worthwhile if you want to improve your chances of a better job or take part in subsidised further training.
