Coto

Coto, usually called Es Coto or Platja des Coto, is a small beach on the northern edge of Colònia de Sant Jordi in southern Mallorca. Its appeal does not lie in convenient facilities or extensive swimming. The narrow stretch of coastline combines fine golden sand, flat rocks and visible traces of historic salt production. Behind the shore, you can see a channel cut into the rock as well as the remains of pumps and sluice gates that were used to channel seawater into the salt pans.

In front of the beach is a rocky, very shallow area that, according to the Balearic Islands beach catalogue, acts like a reef at a depth of around half a metre. This makes reaching open water difficult and means Coto is better suited to cooling off, sunbathing and spending quiet hours by the sea. Mallorca-Beaches, on the other hand, highlights the usually calm water and the sheltered little bay. This combination is precisely what distinguishes Coto from classic swimming coves: you come for the peaceful coastal atmosphere and salt-pan landscape—not for a beach bar, water sports or developed facilities.

Coto lies on the coast near Colònia de Sant Jordi. For finding your way locally, Colònia de Sant Jordi and Ses Salines are the key place names.

If you are looking for the beach, it is therefore best to navigate to Es Coto or Platja des Coto in Colònia de Sant Jordi.

The names also overlap. Alongside Es Coto and Platja des Coto, you may see Platja de s’Estany, Platja d’es Coto or de s’Estany. At the same time, a neighbouring beach is called Platja Estanys. On maps and signs, therefore, pay attention to the exact location rather than relying solely on the addition “Estany”.

The small bay lies between flat rocks and a low jetty. Just offshore is the small island of Llarga, which, together with the shape of the bay, provides protection from waves.

What is the beach like?

Coto is a small, peaceful coastal spot with fine sand, a rocky shoreline and visible remnants of the saltworks.

Mallorca-Beaches gives its length as 70 metres. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue describes it as a sparse or narrow strip of coastline. You should therefore not expect large, continuous expanses of sand. The sand is described as fine and golden, while remnants of Posidonia may lie along the rocky edges.

The most distinctive feature is immediately behind the beach. There, technical and structural remains recall the former salt production: a channel hewn into the rock, electric pumps and gates or sluices. This system carried seawater into the salt pans. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue describes Coto as a secluded place for sunbathing and cites the difficult swimming conditions as the reason for its low visitor numbers. Mallorca-Beaches describes the small beach as quite popular. In practice, both can be true: the bay is small, quiet and simple, but can feel noticeably busy with only a few visitors.

How do you get to Coto and where can you park?

Coto is easy to reach by car via Colònia de Sant Jordi; according to the Balearic Islands beach catalogue, free parking is available a few metres from the beach.

The official tourism portal of the Balearic Islands recommends travelling from Campos and gives a road distance of seven kilometres. From Colònia de Sant Jordi, follow the local signs. This discrepancy may be due to different measuring points or route information, so do not plan around a distance accurate to the metre.

You should be able to park your car free of charge close to the beach. Even so, pay attention to current traffic signs, road markings and possible access restrictions. Parking and access rules in coastal towns in particular may be adjusted seasonally.

Travelling by public transport is also possible in principle. According to the Balearic Islands beach catalogue, the nearest bus stop is around 700 metres away. You should therefore allow for a walk and check the current timetable before departure.

What are the water, seabed and swimming conditions like?

Coto is better suited to a quick dip than carefree swimming farther out, because a rocky shallow-water area makes it difficult to reach the open sea.

The Balearic Islands beach catalogue describes the seabed as rocky, very shallow and almost without a gradient. At a depth of around half a metre, a reef-like rock formation reportedly runs from the mouth of the bay towards the shore. According to this description, you can cool off in water no deeper than your calves before the rocky obstacle makes it difficult to go farther.

Mallorca-Beaches describes the beach differently in one respect: it does not consider it particularly shallow, but says the water is almost always calm. Its sheltered position between flat rocks, a low jetty and the offshore island of Llarga is cited as the reason for the limited wave action. Calm water, however, does not automatically mean easy access here. The rocky seabed remains the main obstacle.

Posidonia may lie along the rocky shore. These deposits are part of the beach’s described appearance and can make access to the water feel even more uneven. Coto is not the obvious choice for athletic swimming or water sports; there are no organised water sports here.

Warning: Check the seabed with every step and never leave children unattended by the water. The calm surface does not change the presence of shallow rock slabs and the reef-like formation.

Is Coto suitable for children?

Coto can work for a quiet break by the sea with children, but the rocky access means it is not an entirely easy family beach.

Mallorca-Beaches classifies Es Coto as child-friendly because of the usually calm water. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue, by contrast, considers the rocky, extremely shallow seabed a serious obstacle to swimming. Both statements can be true at the same time: limited wave action is pleasant for families, while rocks and shallow water make paddling and entering the sea more difficult.

What matters, therefore, is what you expect from a beach day. Coto offers a peaceful setting for sitting on the sand, sunbathing and cooling off carefully. If children want to play freely in shallow water over sand, or if you want to enter the sea with them comfortably, you should check the seabed yourself first.

There are no designated leisure or water sports facilities on site. The lack of beach infrastructure also requires more planning than at a developed town beach. Pack everything you need for your stay and account for the approximately 700-metre walk to the nearest bus stop if you arrive without a car.

What facilities are available at the beach?

There are no beach facilities, beach bar, restaurant or water sports centre directly at Coto.

The small beach is therefore considerably simpler than the more developed sections of Colònia de Sant Jordi. There are no rental services for motorboats, kayaks or pedal boats. According to Mallorca-Beaches, visitors looking for these activities are more likely to find them at the town beach Es Port in Colònia de Sant Jordi.

For food and drinks, you can head to neighbouring Platja Estanys. Beach bars and restaurants are listed there, around 300 metres from Coto. Colònia de Sant Jordi also has restaurants, cafés and shops. Avenida Primavera, between the harbour district and Es Coto, is another area with dining options and small shops.

Natural shade is not listed among the features of this narrow stretch of coastline. You should therefore not count on finding it. The same applies to individual services whose availability may change.

Note: Bring your own water, sun protection and everything else you need for a short beach visit. Nearby Platja Estanys is the specifically recommended place for food and drinks.

When is the best time to visit and how crowded does it get?

Coto is suitable if you are looking for a quiet place to sunbathe, but the small bay can quickly feel busy even with only a few visitors.

The official tourism portal of the Balearic Islands lists Es Coto as a destination for winter, spring, summer and autumn. Specific seasonal opening times are not relevant at the beach itself because there are no facilities.

Mallorca-Beaches, by contrast, describes the 70-metre-long bay as quite popular. Because the usable sandy area is small, the beach can feel busy even with only a few groups.

If swimming is your main priority, the time of day matters less than the seabed: the rocky shallow-water area remains. If you come for the peace and traces of salt production, it is worth remaining flexible and choosing another time if it is busy.

What is near Coto?

Nearby are Platja Estanys, the town centre and harbour of Colònia de Sant Jordi, and the coastal landscape shaped by salt production.

Platja Estanys, where food and drinks are available, is only around 300 metres away. Universal Hotel Marqués lies directly between Es Coto and neighbouring Platja Estanys. For more restaurants, cafés and shops, head towards Colònia de Sant Jordi. Avenida Primavera lies between the town’s harbour area and Coto and is described as a street with several restaurants and small shops.

Port Colònia de Sant Jordi is also the nearest harbour facility. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue gives the distance as 1.3 nautical miles. Boat trips from the harbour to the protected island of Cabrera are also mentioned as an excursion option. Cabrera offers largely unspoilt nature with diverse birdlife and wildlife, as well as Castell de Cabrera from the 15th century.

Directly at the beach, however, the saltworks relics are the most distinctive attraction. The channel, pumps and sluices illustrate how seawater was channelled into the basins used for what was once significant salt production. Coto is therefore best understood as a small coastal and landscape stop rather than a fully equipped day-trip destination.

What should you know before visiting?

Plan Coto as a simple, short beach visit and be prepared for rocks, shallow water and a lack of facilities.

Water shoes are not listed as an official requirement, but you should step particularly carefully on the rocky seabed. Check the entry point yourself before children enter the water. The bay’s sheltered location should not obscure the fact that the Balearic Islands beach catalogue describes the reef-like obstacle as a serious restriction on swimming.

There are no food outlets or water sports directly at the beach. You can find refreshments at Platja Estanys, around 300 metres away, or in Colònia de Sant Jordi. The nearest bus stop is about 700 metres away, while free parking spaces are listed a few metres from the beach. Local signs and markings always take precedence, as access and parking regulations may change.

For dogs, follow the current signs at the beach entrance and any seasonal municipal regulations. The same practical principle applies to shade: do not rely on finding a sheltered spot along the narrow stretch of coastline, and bring your own sun protection.
