Peregons Grans is an unspoiled stretch of sand on the long Es Trenc coastline that can only be reached on foot. Behind the fine, pale sand lie dunes, low vegetation and pine trees; this section is not shaped by development. In front of you, the water is usually clear and turquoise, gradually becoming deeper over a sandy seabed. This contrast is precisely what makes the beach appealing: it belongs to the well-known Es Trenc landscape, which is heavily visited during the season, but the walk from the main access points makes it feel more secluded than the central sections.

On maps and in beach guides, you will encounter several spellings, including Peregons Grans, Es Peregons Grans and Es Pregons Grans. The stated length and exact classification also vary. The Balearic beach catalogue lists Peregons Grans near Sa Ràpita and gives a length of 1,900 metres; other descriptions use the name for a much shorter section between the main Es Trenc beach and Colònia de Sant Jordi. For your beach day, one point matters most: you cannot drive directly there. You park near Es Trenc or in Colònia de Sant Jordi and walk the remaining distance along the sea.

Where is Peregons Grans beach and what is it like?

Peregons Grans lies on Mallorca’s south coast between the main section of Es Trenc and Colònia de Sant Jordi. The official Balearic tourism platform gives the address as 07639 Campos, while the Balearic beach catalogue assigns the beach to Sa Ràpita. On site, its location is clearer than these differing classifications suggest: it is the unspoiled stretch of coast that you can reach from Es Trenc heading towards Colònia de Sant Jordi, or from there in the opposite direction.

The beach forms part of the protected landscape of Es Trenc and Salobrar de Campos. According to the Balearic beach catalogue, the entire protected area of beach, dunes and wetlands covers 1,492 hectares. In the hinterland of the larger system, 171 species of resident and migratory birds have been recorded. The dune belt separates the coast from the salt pans, wetlands and agricultural areas behind it.

Peregons Grans is neither a classic urban beach nor a compact bathing cove enclosed by rocks. Instead, the beach feels like a quiet part of a long ribbon of sand. Fine white sand, dunes, pine trees and largely undeveloped surroundings define the landscape. In clear weather, the view across the sea extends as far as the Cabrera archipelago.

How do you get to Peregons Grans?

You can reach Peregons Grans on foot from Colònia de Sant Jordi or from the Es Trenc car park. Both routes cross a largely natural stretch of coastline; there is neither a road nor a dedicated car park directly at the beach.

From Colònia de Sant Jordi, first follow the signs to the town and park your vehicle there. The official Balearic tourism platform then describes a walk of approximately two kilometres, passing Es Molí de s’Estanyo del Marqués. Other beach descriptions give a walking time of around 15 minutes from Colònia de Sant Jordi. These details do not fully correspond and apparently depend on where you start and which part of the long beach section is considered the destination. It is therefore better to allow plenty of time rather than relying on a tight estimate in minutes.

The second option begins at the paid Es Trenc car park. From there, walk along the beach towards Colònia de Sant Jordi. The Balearic tourism platform estimates approximately 30 minutes for this route. Other descriptions give ten to 15 minutes to reach the first quieter areas. The farther you move away from the main access points, the longer the walk becomes and, as a rule, the greater the distance between beachgoers.

The route is considered easy and is also described by the official tourism platform as suitable for families with children. However, you will sometimes be walking on soft sand without continuous shade. Water shoes or other suitable footwear, drinking water and light luggage make the approach more comfortable.

Where can you park, and is there a bus connection?

You can park near Es Trenc or in or near Colònia de Sant Jordi, but not directly at Peregons Grans. The Balearic beach catalogue mentions a paid car park and lists a price of three euros per day. As charges and regulations may change, you should expect to pay the fee currently shown on local signs.

For access to the Es Trenc car park, the route is described as running via Campos and the Ma-6040 towards Colònia de Sant Jordi. Near the salt pans, the access road branches off along the salt fields towards the large car park. From there, continue on foot towards Peregons Grans.

Alternatively, you can leave your car in Colònia de Sant Jordi and walk through the local beach areas towards Es Trenc. This option is convenient if you would like to visit restaurants, cafés or the town’s promenade after swimming. Which parking option is closer depends on the section of Peregons Grans you are heading for.

The Balearic beach catalogue also lists a bus stop around 200 metres away. Because Peregons Grans itself can only be reached on foot, this distance refers to a developed access area and not to every point along the secluded stretch of beach. You will therefore still have to walk after the bus journey.

Warning: Do not assume that you can reach your bathing spot immediately from the car park or bus stop. Peregons Grans is quieter precisely because the final section must be covered on foot.

What are the sand, water and swimming conditions like?

Peregons Grans has fine, pale sand and a gently sloping entrance into the sea. The seabed remains sandy across large areas, although occasional shells, seaweed residue and smaller stony areas may occur. The water is described as clear to crystal clear and, in calm conditions, displays the turquoise and blue shades typical of Es Trenc.

The shallow entrance is pleasant for relaxed swimming and for people who feel less confident in deep water. Families also appreciate the long, gentle transition. Children must nevertheless be supervised, especially because no reliably permanent lifeguard presence can be confirmed for Peregons Grans. A lifeguard tower may be present on individual sections of the Es Trenc coastline, but permanent staffing at Peregons Grans is not guaranteed.

Depending on the weather and currents, Posidonia seagrass is washed onto the beach. Sometimes it merely forms dark lines along the shore, while at other times larger deposits can make entering the water and swimming considerably more difficult. Conditions can change, so recent impressions shortly before your visit are more useful than older beach photographs.

Special conditions apply to skippers. The Balearic beach catalogue describes a seabed of sand, algae and a small rocky area, as well as a difficult-to-detect shoal that can be problematic in bad weather. Boats should therefore keep their distance from the beach. The old landing place near Illa Gavina is named as a suitable anchorage; with westerly winds, Platja d’es Coto is considered the better option. According to the catalogue, the nearest harbour facility is three nautical miles away in Colònia de Sant Jordi.

Is Peregons Grans suitable for children?

Peregons Grans is generally suitable for children because of its fine sand and shallow water entry, but it requires more preparation than a serviced family beach. The official Balearic tourism platform describes the walk as easy and manageable with children. At the same time, there are no reliably available toilets, showers, food outlets or rental sun loungers at the destination.

For families, both the swimming and the outward and return journeys are therefore important considerations. A walk of approximately two kilometres is given from Colònia de Sant Jordi; according to official information, you should allow around 30 minutes from the Es Trenc car park. Other descriptions mention shorter walking times, but they may refer to closer sections of the coastline.

Bring drinking water, food, sun protection and everything your children need for the visit. A backpack is more practical than several bags when walking across soft sand. As natural shade is only available to a limited extent along the edges and beneath individual pine trees, you should not expect a permanently shaded place to lie down.

If short distances, reliable toilet planning and a quick return to restaurants are important to your family, the main access points at Es Trenc or the beaches close to Colònia de Sant Jordi are more convenient. Peregons Grans is better suited to families who enjoy walking and are happy to organise their beach day entirely by themselves.

What facilities are available directly on the beach?

There is no reliably available tourist infrastructure directly at Peregons Grans. The official Balearic tourism platform explicitly lists no services on the beach and recommends bringing drinking water and food. Beach bars, showers and sun lounger rental are also not listed for this unspoiled section.

Information about lifeguards is not conclusive. At Peregons Grans, you should not count on a supervised swimming area. Particularly on unspoiled stretches of beach, the situation may vary according to the season, section and time of day.

Everything you need for several hours must be carried in and out by you: water, provisions, a towel or mat, and sun protection. Restaurants, cafés and other facilities are only available again at the more developed access points to Es Trenc or in Colònia de Sant Jordi. Depending on your starting point and chosen place on the beach, the walk back may be considerably longer than a quick trip to a beach bar.

The lack of services is not an oversight but part of the character of this protected stretch of coastline. Comfort here comes from the soft sand, open views and distance from development, not from facilities on the beach.

When is the best time to visit, and how busy does Peregons Grans get?

Peregons Grans is usually most pleasant in the morning or later in the afternoon, when the walk is less exposed to the strong midday sun. In the morning, the sand along the route has not yet heated up as much; later in the day, some beach sections begin to empty again. There is very little natural shade along the open coastline.

Assessments of visitor levels differ, which can be explained by the beach’s length and its various access points. The Balearic beach catalogue rates seasonal visitor levels as high and describes Es Trenc on summer weekends as one of Mallorca’s most visited unspoiled stretches of coastline. Several beach guides, however, describe Peregons Grans as quieter than the central sections of Es Trenc. Both can be true at the same time: the walk spreads visitors out more widely, but it does not protect the beach from the summer crowds found along the entire Es Trenc coastline.

Anyone looking for as much peace as possible should walk farther away from both access sides. In the central areas, towels are often spaced farther apart than near Es Trenc or Colònia de Sant Jordi. The return journey will also be longer, however. On summer weekends, you should neither expect an empty beach nor assume that parking spaces will be available at every time of day.

In the late afternoon, the warmer light transforms the dune landscape, and the beach is known for its sunsets. You should factor in the timing of the walk back along the coast, especially if you have ventured farther into the secluded section.

Is Peregons Grans a naturist beach?

Naturism is practised at Peregons Grans and is particularly well established in the quieter sections. The official Balearic tourism platform explicitly describes Es Pregons Grans as a recommended naturist beach; other beach guides describe naturism as customary or tolerated.

This does not mean that you have to swim without clothing. Along this long stretch of coastline, clothed beachgoers, naturists, couples, families and beach walkers share the sand. The farther a spot lies from the main access points, the more frequently a relaxed naturist atmosphere is described.

If naturism does not appeal to you, it is best to remain closer to the busier transition areas towards Es Trenc or Colònia de Sant Jordi. The crowd there is more mixed, and the walk back to the developed areas is shorter. Those specifically looking for peace and naturism usually continue into the less frequented sections.

The beach’s spaciousness generally allows distance between groups. On busy summer days and weekends, however, it can still become considerably more crowded than its secluded location initially suggests.

What is near Peregons Grans?

Nearby attractions include Es Trenc, the beaches of Colònia de Sant Jordi, Salobrar de Campos and the harbour for excursions to Cabrera. This makes it easy to combine a beach day with a coastal walk or a later visit to the town.

Along the Es Trenc coastline, you can reach the central sections of Es Trenc and continue towards Ses Covetes and Sa Ràpita. There you will find the busier access points and parking areas. In the opposite direction, the coast leads to Colònia de Sant Jordi and the beaches Es Marquès, Es Dolç and Es Carbó.

Behind the beach lies the natural and wetland landscape of Es Trenc–Salobrar de Campos. Dunes separate the sea from salt pans and wetlands. The sensitive vegetation stabilises the dune belt, while pine trees characterise parts of the hinterland. You should avoid entering the protected dune areas and remain on the sand in front of marked boundaries.

Boat trips to the Cabrera archipelago depart from the harbour of Colònia de Sant Jordi. The official Balearic tourism platform describes Cabrera as a terrestrial and marine nature park consisting of 18 protected islands. From the beach, the archipelago can be seen on the horizon in clear weather.

Colònia de Sant Jordi is also the nearest place for restaurants, cafés, toilets and a walk after your beach visit. However, these facilities are not located directly at Peregons Grans and can only be reached after walking back to the town.

What should you keep in mind for your beach day?

For Peregons Grans, you need sufficient water, provisions, sun protection and luggage that is as easy to carry as possible. The walk partly crosses soft sand, the beach offers only limited natural shade, and no reliably available services are provided on site.

A backpack makes the walk easier, especially if you are also carrying towels, food or a parasol. Water shoes are recommended for the approach, even though the beach itself consists mainly of fine sand. On longer walks along the shore, they also protect against hot sand and occasional shells or stony areas.

Stay in front of the dune line and observe any barriers. The dunes and their vegetation belong to the protected Es Trenc–Salobrar de Campos system. You should take away everything you bring to the beach, as no guaranteed waste disposal infrastructure is listed directly along the secluded section.

Before swimming, check the wind, waves and current Posidonia conditions along the shore. Depending on the timing, washed-up seagrass may cause almost no disturbance or may make entering the water considerably more difficult. A visible lifeguard station also does not automatically mean that it is staffed.
