Estanys

Estanys is the beach for you if you want to experience the fine sand of the Es Trenc coast without going far from Colònia de Sant Jordi. This stretch of coast lies on the western edge of town and marks the transition from the built-up area to the protected dune and salt pan landscape. Sea daffodils, sea holly, junipers and pines grow behind the gently sloping sand—plants that can cope with abundant sunshine, salt and little water. Farther inland are the Estanys, also known as the sa Vall salt pans, which gave the beach and municipality their name.

What initially seems simple is surprisingly complex in terms of geography and names. Estanys is also known as Raconada de s’Estany, es Molí de s’Estany or Platja des Marquès; the section belonging to Campos is also called es Coto. Maps and beach guides also differ significantly in the stated size. The Balearic Islands Beach Catalogue lists Estanys as a compact, 50-metre-long sandy beach with high seasonal occupancy. Other figures apparently include adjacent stretches of coastline. On site, you will therefore experience it less as a clearly isolated bathing cove and more as the beginning of a continuous coastal and dune system.

Where exactly is Estanys beach?

Estanys lies on the western edge of Colònia de Sant Jordi on Mallorca’s south coast. The Balearic Islands Beach Catalogue places the beach seven kilometres from ses Salines, between the headlands of Punta de sa Llova and Punta des Tords.

This coastal strip also marks an administrative transition. Estanys is assigned to the area of ses Salines, while the section known as Platja des Marquès or es Coto belongs to Campos. This border location explains why maps and beach guides use different names and dimensions.

From the edge of town, the coast opens towards the west. A consolidated dune system begins behind the beach, followed farther inland by the sa Vall salt pans. The entire ecosystem belongs to the Área Natural de Especial Interés Es Trenc–Es Salobrar de Campos. Estanys is therefore not an urban beach separated from its hinterland, but the point where Colònia de Sant Jordi meets a protected landscape.

Note: Depending on the beach guide, Estanys is listed as being 110, 250 or even 500 metres long. These considerable differences are likely due to varying definitions of the beach sections. The beach listed in the Balearic Islands Beach Catalogue is stated to be 50 metres long and 12 metres wide.

What is Estanys beach like?

Estanys combines a sandy beach close to town with dunes, coastal vegetation and the salt pans behind it. This transition in particular distinguishes it from a classic harbour or hotel beach: paths and facilities remain close in the direction of Colònia de Sant Jordi, while the coast becomes increasingly natural towards the west.

The Balearic Islands Beach Catalogue describes the sand as fine. Behind it, sea daffodils, sea holly, junipers and pines stabilise the dune system. This vegetation grows under difficult conditions, with intense sunlight, high salinity and little available water. The dunes are therefore not merely a backdrop, but a sensitive part of the beach.

The Estanys, also known as the sa Vall salt pans, also shaped the name of the place. According to the Balearic Islands Beach Catalogue, these lagoons were probably already used by Romans who had settled in southern Mallorca. It is also thought that Guius or Tucis, one of the Mallorcan towns mentioned by Pliny, may have been located in this area. However, this historical classification is explicitly an assumption, not a confirmed archaeological finding.

Estanys is particularly suitable for a beach day that combines swimming with a walk along the coast. If being close to places serving food and drink is important to you, stay nearer the town. For a stronger sense of the landscape, continue along the water towards the adjoining natural beaches.

How do you get to Estanys and where can you park?

You can reach Estanys via Colònia de Sant Jordi, then head towards the western edge of town and the beach. The Ma-6040 is the road leading into town; from the built-up area, short access paths and some wooden walkways lead to the sand.

If travelling by car, you can use public parking spaces or roadside parking in Colònia de Sant Jordi. Another parking area is located near Hotel Marquès. Spaces close to the beach fill up quickly during the busy summer months. Arriving early in the morning therefore improves your chances of having a shorter walk.

Access from the town to the beach is short and mostly level. In some places, paved paths or wooden walkways cross the low dune area. Nevertheless, Estanys does not offer step-free access everywhere. If you use a wheelchair, walking aid or pushchair, you should therefore not assume that the entire route is free of obstacles simply because the terrain is flat.

Caution: Drive and park only in designated areas. The dunes belong to the protected coastal system and should be entered only via the existing paths and walkways.

The nearest harbour is Port Colònia de Sant Jordi. The harbour is also a convenient landmark if you want to combine your beach visit with time in the town.

What are the sand, water and swimming conditions like?

Estanys has fine, light-coloured sand and a gentle entry into the sea. The water is often experienced as shallow or slow to deepen; in calm weather, the beach is well suited to relaxed swimming.

According to the Balearic Islands Beach Catalogue, the seabed consists of sand and algae. Depending on the weather and currents, algae or washed-up plant material may be visible. For swimmers, the sandy bottom usually provides an easy entry, although wind and current sea conditions can change the situation at any time.

The gentle slope and often calm water make Estanys appealing in principle to families and people who prefer to enter the sea gradually. However, this is no guarantee of safe swimming. Pay attention to flags, notices and any lifeguards on duty. Children in particular need close supervision even in shallow water.

The beach is somewhat more sheltered than some neighbouring stretches of coast. The Balearic Islands Beach Catalogue even rates the water and underwater conditions as good for anchoring: Estanys offers more protection from south-westerly winds than es Perengons Petits and Platja des Trenc, where anchoring is not recommended. For boats, the seabed is described as sand and algae, with a depth of up to three metres. The nearest harbour is in Colònia de Sant Jordi.

Note: Calm water is common here, but it is not guaranteed every day. Check the wind, waves and current flags before swimming.

What facilities are available at the beach?

In the sections closer to town, you will find seasonal sun loungers, parasols, toilets and places serving food and drink. There are also bars or restaurants near the beach.

Facilities may differ depending on the season and the particular section of beach. Sun lounger and parasol hire is concentrated in the more developed areas towards Colònia de Sant Jordi and the neighbouring hotels. Farther west, the surroundings become simpler and more natural. If you want to walk farther along the coast, you should therefore bring your own water, food and sun protection.

Toilets are listed at the beach or at nearby businesses. However, you should not count on freshwater showers; they may be absent at some access points. Do not assume that you will find a shower at your chosen beach entrance.

Sports activities also depend on the season. Depending on the operator and section, options may include windsurfing, sailing, stand-up paddleboarding or pedal boats. Whether these activities are actually available on the day of your visit may vary. The same applies to lifeguard services: lifeguard stations and operating hours can differ depending on the season, weather and beach section.

Natural shade is available only to a limited extent. Although pines and other trees grow behind the beach, the open sand remains exposed to the sun. Bringing your own sun protection is particularly advisable if you move away from the main access point and the rental parasols.

When is the best time to visit Estanys?

Estanys is generally quietest in the morning or later in the afternoon. The Balearic Islands Beach Catalogue classifies seasonal occupancy as high, and the access points near Colònia de Sant Jordi in particular fill up quickly on busy summer days.

Arriving early offers two practical advantages: finding a parking space is usually easier, and you have more freedom to choose your spot along the narrow, officially listed section of beach. Around midday, the open sandy areas are more exposed to the sun. If you do not want to use a rental parasol, bring your own shade, plenty of water and light footwear for the warm sand.

Crowds often decrease again later in the afternoon. This is also a good time if you want to combine the beach with a walk towards Es Trenc or a visit to Colònia de Sant Jordi. However, the availability of sun loungers, food and drink, water sports and lifeguard services depends on the season and the respective operator.

The differing size figures explain why the beach may not feel equally crowded everywhere despite its high occupancy. Towels are usually placed closer together directly by the main access point and facilities. There may be more space along the adjoining coast, although the infrastructure also becomes more limited there.

What can you do nearby?

Nearby places include Colònia de Sant Jordi, the harbour, Es Coto, Bassa des Cabot and the sandy coast towards Es Trenc. Estanys is therefore a suitable starting point for a day combining the beach, a coastal walk and time in town.

Colònia de Sant Jordi offers restaurants and other places serving food and drink near the beach. Port Colònia de Sant Jordi is the nearest harbour, and boat trips to the Cabrera archipelago also depart from there. If you are planning such a trip, you can combine your time at the harbour with Estanys without having to travel to another coastal town.

The sandy coastline continues west towards Es Trenc. Along the way, you gradually leave the areas close to town and enter a landscape increasingly shaped by dunes and low vegetation. Nearby beaches include Es Coto, Bassa des Cabot and Es Perengons Petits. As a rough guide, Es Coto is around 500 metres away, Bassa des Cabot around 700 metres and Platja des Port around 1.4 kilometres away.

The sa Vall salt pans lie inland. They are part of the landscape from which the name Estanys derives. The beach, dunes and salt pans belong to the protected area of Es Trenc–Es Salobrar de Campos, so stay on existing paths and keep your distance from the vegetation.

What should you consider for your beach day?

For Estanys, you should mainly bring sun protection, plenty of water and a plan for finding parking. Although the beach is right next to Colònia de Sant Jordi, its high seasonal occupancy and limited facilities in some sections make a little preparation worthwhile.

If you stay near the main access points, you are more likely to find seasonal sun loungers, parasols, toilets and places serving food and drink. For a longer walk towards Es Trenc, you should plan to be more self-sufficient. Bring drinks, snacks and your own source of shade, as facilities decrease along the more natural sections.

In the dune area, use only the existing access routes. Sea daffodils, sea holly, junipers and pines stabilise the sand under demanding environmental conditions. Leaving the paths can damage this vegetation and consequently affect the stability of the dunes.

The fine sand and gentle entry make the beach appealing to families. However, high occupancy, strong sun and changing swimming conditions can make a visit more demanding. Check the flags, supervise children closely at the water and do not assume that lifeguard services or rentals will be available every day.

Seasonal or local bans may apply to dogs. Check the current signs at the relevant beach access point. The same applies to rules governing use of the protected area and seasonal changes to services.
