Formentor beach lies where Mallorca’s north loses its familiar holiday-resort character: in a narrow, wooded bay on the Formentor peninsula, framed by pines, holm oaks and the mountains of the Serra de Tramuntana. According to the Balearic Islands beach catalogue, its strip of pale sand measures 840 metres but is only around eight metres wide. This unusual shape defines the beach. You sit almost beneath the branches, look across clear water towards the Illa de Formentor and are still not in a secluded rocky cove without infrastructure.

Also known as Platja de Formentor, Cala Formentor or Cala Pi de la Posada, the beach combines natural scenery with plenty of comfort: shade beneath pine trees, gently shelving water, sunbeds, restaurants and accessible entrances. That does not automatically make it quiet. Occupancy is considered high during the season, and the limited area of sand quickly becomes crowded, especially around midday. There is also seasonally regulated access via the Ma-2210. If you choose your bus, boat or time of day wisely, you can experience Formentor much more comfortably than on a spontaneous drive during peak visiting hours.

Where is Formentor beach, and what makes it special?

Formentor beach is located on the Formentor peninsula in the municipality of Pollença, around 14 kilometres from Port de Pollença. The bay is called Cala Formentor or Cala Pi de la Posada; alongside the beach, it also includes Cala Gentil and the opposite Illa de Formentor.

Formentor is not a broad resort beach but a long, very narrow strip of sand between the sea and the forest. Pines and holm oaks grow close to the shore, with some branches reaching almost over the water. This makes the coastline appear greener and more enclosed than many of Mallorca’s open, developed sandy beaches. The area is listed as a protected natural area in the Balearic Islands beach catalogue.

Despite this natural setting, Formentor is not a deserted natural beach. The historic Hotel Formentor shaped the bay early on and made the location internationally famous. According to the Balearic Islands beach catalogue, its guests included Winston Churchill, John Wayne and Octavio Paz. Today, families, couples, day visitors and travellers combining a swim with a trip across the peninsula all meet on the beach.

Its compact shape has practical consequences: the distance between the trees and the water remains short, but the eight-metre-wide strip of sand offers little space for ball games, large beach tents or plenty of distance from the next towel.

What should you know about Formentor beach?

Formentor is a 840-metre-long sandy beach around eight metres wide, with high seasonal occupancy. The key details come from the Balearic Islands beach catalogue.

The narrow shape explains why Formentor can feel full even with a moderate number of beachgoers. People are spread along a long shoreline, but there is little depth between the edge of the forest, the sunbeds and the water. If you bring only a small towel, you will find a gap more easily than with extensive beach equipment.

The names can cause confusion: “Formentor” refers not only to the beach but also to the entire peninsula and the cape with its lighthouse farther to the northeast. For navigation, “Platja de Formentor” or “Cala Pi de la Posada” is therefore more precise than simply “Formentor”.

What are the sand, water and swimming conditions like?

Formentor has fine, pale sand and mostly shallow, gently shelving access to clear water. Small pebbles or stonier areas may occur along the waterline and in individual sections.

The sheltered bay is often calm, making the beach suitable for relaxed swimming and playing at the water’s edge. Children and less confident swimmers benefit from the gradual entry. However, calm water is not guaranteed: wind, waves and local conditions can change at any time. Pay attention to flags and instructions on site, and supervise children even in shallow areas.

The rockier edges are particularly suitable for snorkelling, as the seabed becomes more varied there. Water shoes are normally unnecessary on the fine sand but may be comfortable for sensitive feet in pebbly or stony areas.

The bay is also considered a suitable anchorage for boats. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue describes a sandy seabed with a depth of around three metres at a distance of 200 metres and around five metres at 300 metres from the coast. However, winds from the southeast, south or southwest create a risk of running aground. Between the coast and the Illa de Formentor, the water is only around one metre deep in places; sailing through or anchoring in this channel is expressly not recommended.

Warning: The favourable swimming conditions are no substitute for caution. Current flags, sea conditions and instructions from lifeguards always take precedence.

How do you get to Formentor beach?

During the regulated season, the most predictable way to reach the beach is with TIB bus line 334 from Port de Pollença. The line connects Alcúdia, Port de Pollença and the Formentor peninsula and stops on the peninsula at locations including Mirador del Colomer, Formentor beach, Cala Figuera–Cala Murta and the lighthouse.

By car, the route from Port de Pollença follows the winding Ma-2210. The beach is signposted, but access is regulated seasonally. For the published regulations, the Consell de Mallorca specifies the period from 15 May to 18 October, daily from 10 to 22. Entry on the section from Port de Pollença to the beach is limited and possible only while the authorised parking spaces are not full. Stricter restrictions apply to the next section from the beach to the lighthouse; private vehicles without the appropriate authorisation may not drive there during the regulated hours.

Vehicles transporting people with reduced mobility may require prior authorisation. For this, the Consell de Mallorca requires you to contact the DGT traffic authority at least three working days in advance.

An appealing alternative is the boat from Port de Pollença. Depending on the service, you should allow around 25 minutes for the crossing; many services operate seasonally, often during the warmer part of the year. Departure times and operating days may change. Especially when the road is busy and parking spaces are scarce, taking the boat removes much of the organisational pressure from the excursion.

Note: Before departure, check the current traffic regulations from the Consell de Mallorca and the timetable for TIB line 334. Access periods and service to individual stops may be adjusted.

Can you park at Formentor beach?

There are designated parking areas near the beach, but available spaces are difficult to find during the season. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue expressly notes the very high number of local and visiting beachgoers and the strained parking situation.

The parking areas are close to the beach; charges may apply depending on current management arrangements. Do not rely on older price information, but check the displays and signs on site.

During regulated access periods, parking is not merely a matter of convenience. The Consell de Mallorca permits limited entry on the section between Port de Pollença and the beach until the authorised parking spaces are full. A sign before the start of the Formentor road may provide information about available spaces. Because other vehicles may already be on their way at that point, a displayed remaining capacity does not guarantee a parking space.

If you want to avoid searching for parking and possible access problems, it makes sense to leave your car in Port de Pollença and continue on line 334. Port de Pollença has several stops for onward travel towards Formentor.

What facilities are available at Formentor beach?

Formentor combines its wooded setting with toilets, showers, restaurants and the rental of sunbeds and parasols. Restaurants and beach bars are located near the shore, and simple food options are also available around the entrance area.

Sunbeds and parasols are rented seasonally on parts of the beach. Because the strip of sand is narrow and the popular places beneath the trees also fill quickly, you should not expect to find a free shaded spot or sunbed in your preferred section.

Depending on the season, water sports may include pedal boats, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaks or windsurfing. Excursion boats also use a jetty in the middle section of the beach. The range and operating hours depend on the season and provider.

The Balearic Islands beach catalogue lists Formentor as accessible. Wooden walkways make it easier to cross the soft ground. However, this does not automatically mean that every section of the long shoreline is equally easy to reach. Lifeguards may also be present during the peak season.

Despite the restaurants, it is worth bringing drinking water and a small snack. Especially with heavier traffic or a return journey based on bus or boat schedules, it is convenient not to depend entirely on the options available at the beach.

When is Formentor beach most enjoyable, and how busy does it get?

Formentor is usually most enjoyable early in the morning or later in the afternoon, when the beach is less densely occupied than around midday. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue expressly rates seasonal occupancy as high.

Several factors come together in summer: the beach is well known, the access route continues to viewpoints and the lighthouse, and the strip of sand, only eight metres wide, leaves little room to spread out. The areas around the main entrances, restaurants and sunbeds can therefore quickly feel crowded.

In the morning, the chances of finding parking are generally better, provided the current access regulations allow arrival by car. Spaces become available again later in the afternoon as the first day visitors leave. At the same time, the pine trees cast longer shadows over the rear section of the beach. If you primarily want to swim rather than tour the entire peninsula, Formentor can therefore work well as a half-day excursion.

Outside the busiest summer weeks, the scenery remains the same while pressure from visitor numbers may be lower. Services, boat connections, lifeguards and water sports may then be limited or paused.

Note: Visiting early helps you avoid the crowds, but during the official restricted hours, vehicles that entered the strictly regulated section towards the lighthouse before 10 must leave it again by 9:59, according to the Consell de Mallorca.

What can you do around Formentor?

Around the beach are Mirador del Colomer, Cala Figuera, Cala Murta and the lighthouse at Cap de Formentor. During its operating period, TIB line 334 connects these destinations with Port de Pollença and the beach.

Mirador del Colomer is a convenient stop on the Formentor route. Farther out on the peninsula are the coves Cala Figuera and Cala Murta, as well as Far de Formentor. Whether and how you can reach them on the same day depends on the current traffic regulations and bus timetable. During the regulated hours, the section beyond the beach is not freely accessible by private car.

Port de Pollença is the practical counterpart to the natural peninsula. There you will find the waterfront promenade, a wider selection of restaurants and bus and boat connections to Formentor. The town is therefore a good starting point even if you are travelling without a hire car.

The Illa de Formentor lies directly off the coast. It shapes the view from the bay but should not tempt you into an ill-considered crossing: according to the Balearic Islands beach catalogue, the water in the channel between the island and the coast is exceptionally shallow in places, while boats also operate in the bay.

If you combine the beach with viewpoints, it is better to plan only a few stops and allow sufficient extra time. The distances may appear manageable on the map, but access controls, winding roads and bus and boat schedules determine the course of the day.

What should you consider for a successful beach day?

Travel light, check access in advance and expect little personal space during the season. A compact towel, drinking water and water shoes for sensitive feet are more practical than extensive beach equipment.

The pine trees provide natural shade, but these places are popular. The shade also shifts throughout the day. Sun protection therefore remains necessary even if you find a spot at the edge of the forest. When setting up, keep paths, entrances and managed areas clear.

For families, the gentle entry into the water is a strong advantage. At the same time, the limited space on the sand can be impractical with a pushchair, toys and several bags. The entrances listed as accessible and the wooden walkways make access easier but do not replace checking the conditions on site for your individual needs.

For the return journey, do not wait until shortly before leaving to check bus or boat times. The peninsula is not a place where you can always switch to numerous alternatives if you miss a connection. If you arrive by car, also remember that permission to access the beach does not include permission to continue to the lighthouse.

Only bring dogs if current signs allow it. No reliably consistent year-round rule is published for this beach. The same applies to individual seasonal services: rentals, lifeguards and restaurants may differ outside the peak season.
