Albercuix is not a single, compact beach but a 1.450-metre-long stretch of coastline made up of narrow sandy areas and small coves on the edge of Port de Pollença. This layout is precisely what distinguishes Platja d’Albercuix, also known as Albercutx, from broad, continuous bathing bays: in some places, only a few metres of sand lie between the promenade and the water, while elsewhere a slightly larger area opens up. Pines and tamarisks, summer houses and hotels line the coast.

The other defining feature is the unusually shallow water. According to the Balearic Islands beach catalogue, even 300 metres from the shore the water is still only about one metre deep, with sand underfoot. This is appealing for families and anyone who enjoys spending a long time in shallow water. However, these conditions are unsuitable for anchoring. Albercuix lies between Port de Pollença and Punta de l’Avançada, where La Fortalesa and, farther out, a lighthouse are located. Despite its peaceful and almost private appearance in places, the beach is heavily visited during the season.

Where is Albercuix beach and what is it like?

Albercuix lies in the Bay of Pollença between Port de Pollença and Punta de l’Avançada. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue places the beach around six kilometres from Pollença, while the official Balearic Islands tourism website gives a distance of seven kilometres when travelling from Pollença. The figure may therefore vary slightly depending on your chosen section of beach and starting point.

The name refers to a long stretch of coast with numerous small sandy beaches. Heading north from the harbour area, the sandy sections become smaller and are separated by stone breakwaters or stretches of coastline. A promenade provides pedestrian access to the individual coves. Immediately behind it, pines, tamarisks, homes and hotels shape the scenery.

Albercuix therefore combines two types of beach: you swim along a developed urban coastline, but there is no uniformly wide, continuous beach. Some sections offer more space, while others consist of very small pockets of sand. According to the Balearic Islands beach catalogue, the entire coastal strip is only twelve metres wide on average.

On the side facing away from the harbour is a military area with a naval and seaplane base. The publicly accessible path ends there at a barrier, and it is not possible to continue along the coast.

How large is Platja d’Albercuix?

How do you get to Albercuix and where can you park?

Albercuix can be reached by car, on foot along the promenade and by public transport. From Pollença, first follow the signs to Port de Pollença and then continue towards Formentor or the town centre and the northern waterfront.

On entering Port de Pollença, the route passes through several roundabouts. One common landmark is the roundabout with the seaplane: head towards Formentor there, continue straight ahead at the next roundabout and then follow the signs towards the centre. Because Albercuix consists of many separate sections, the best place to get off or park depends on which cove you want to visit.

The Balearic Islands beach catalogue lists a free car park near the beach. Additional parking is available in the neighbouring residential area. Parking arrangements can change, so check road markings, signs and any time restrictions when you arrive.

Caution: Albercuix does not have one central access point for the entire 1.450-metre-long stretch of coastline. Before leaving your car, check that you are actually close to your preferred section of beach.

What are the water, sand and swimming conditions like?

The water at Albercuix slopes exceptionally gently and remains very shallow for a considerable distance. According to the Balearic Islands beach catalogue, even around 300 metres from the shore the water is still only approximately one metre deep, with a sandy seabed below.

The small beaches consist of sand. Depending on the section, however, the area available for sunbathing can be very narrow. Stone breakwaters divide the individual coves, while the promenade connects their access points. On calm days, the sheltered location in the Bay of Pollença can produce a very smooth water surface.

Precisely because of the shallow water, Albercuix is frequently used by families, swimmers and stand-up paddleboarders. This does not guarantee calm conditions: wind, weather and local conditions can change at any time. Pay attention to the flags and follow the instructions of the lifeguards.

For boats, the shallow depth is a disadvantage. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue rates the water and underwater conditions as unsuitable for anchoring. Anyone arriving from the water should not mistake the shallow sandy seabed for a suitable anchorage.

Note: The shallow water makes entering the sea easier for many children and less confident swimmers. However, it is no substitute for supervision or checking the current swimming conditions.

Is Albercuix suitable for families and people with limited mobility?

Not all of the many small beach sections necessarily offer the same conditions. The average width is only twelve metres, and some coves are so small that a family may struggle to find enough space. Larger sandy areas are more likely to be found towards the harbour, while the coves become smaller farther north.

For children, the gentle transition into the water is an important advantage. The sandy bottom remains shallow far from shore, so you do not reach deep water after only a few steps. At the same time, children should always be supervised in shallow water, and you should pay attention to the signs indicating the current swimming conditions.

If you require step-free access, look specifically for the designated wooden walkways. Classification as accessible does not automatically mean that every individual sandy corner along the entire stretch of coast can be reached in the same way.

What facilities are available at Albercuix?

According to the official Balearic Islands tourism website, Albercuix has showers, lifeguard supervision, water sports, wooden walkways for visitors with limited mobility and places to eat and drink. However, these services are not necessarily distributed evenly across all the small coves and may be seasonal.

Places to eat and drink and outdoor terraces can be found along the developed part of the coast. In the small coves farther north, however, you should not automatically expect toilets or showers directly beside each sandy section; such facilities are more likely to be available around the larger beach area near the harbour.

This is due to Albercuix’s length and fragmented layout: facilities at one section are not automatically available at every cove. Sun loungers are provided on several sandy areas, but not continuously along the entire coastal strip. There are no traditional chiringuitos directly on the smaller coves; shops, bars and restaurants are set farther back towards Port de Pollença.

For a more secluded section, it is therefore best to bring water and everything else you need for a day at the beach. If showers, lifeguards or accessible entry are important to you, check the facilities at the specific access point before settling down.

When is Albercuix busiest and where are you more likely to find space?

Albercuix is heavily visited during the season by both local residents and holidaymakers. According to the Balearic Islands beach catalogue, its easy accessibility, promenade and shallow water all contribute to the high number of visitors.

Occupancy is not the same everywhere. Starting from the harbour, you first encounter larger beach sections, while the coves become smaller along the promenade. The promenade is also used for walks. Sandy areas farther north may receive evening sun for longer than larger sections where buildings cast shade earlier. If you are specifically looking for evening sunshine, it can therefore be worthwhile walking along the individual coves.

What is around Albercuix?

Around Albercuix are the harbour of Port de Pollença, Punta de l’Avançada, La Fortalesa, a lighthouse and the naval and seaplane base. This combination of a populated coastal resort, military grounds and a historic fortification shapes the beach more strongly than a purely natural setting would.

La Fortalesa was built in 1622 to protect the Bay of Pollença from attacks by corsairs. The Argentinian artist Roberto Romaugé later bought the site and turned the fortress into an artists’ centre. Names associated with this place include Joseph de Creef, Andrés Segovia, Tito Cittadini and Joaquín Sorolla. Romaugé had discovered the area through Anglada Camarassa, a painter based in Pollença.

During the Spanish Civil War, the property was expropriated and used as a base for seaplanes. Ramón Franco was assigned to this base. Its military use remains visible in the landscape today; at the northern end, a barrier prevents visitors from continuing farther.

La Fortalesa stands in the central part of Punta de l’Avançada, while the lighthouse is located at its outermost tip. Both form part of the coastal scenery but are not described as freely accessible beach attractions. For a walk without a specific sightseeing destination, the promenade offers views of coves, boats, houses and pines.

What practical points should you consider for a day at the beach?

Choose your section of Albercuix according to the amount of space, shade and facilities you want. The significant differences between the individual coves are more important for planning than the beach’s overall length.

If you are visiting with small children, a larger sandy area is usually more practical than one of the tiny coves. Although the water remains shallow for a very long distance, the narrow sunbathing areas can quickly fill up during the season. Areas beneath the old pines may provide natural shade, but an available spot is not guaranteed when occupancy is high.

If you have limited mobility, follow the signs to the wooden walkways. According to the Balearic Islands beach catalogue, Albercuix is accessible, but access may vary because of the many separate sections. The same applies to showers, lifeguards, sun loungers and water sports: these facilities are listed for Albercuix but may not be available at every small cove.
