Costa d’en Blanes

Costa d’en Blanes is a compact sandy beach on the coast of Calvià, framed by Punta Negra and Puerto Portals. Unlike a secluded natural cove, it lies directly beside established leisure facilities: Marineland is next door, and Puerto Portals is also nearby. Even so, the beach itself remains manageable at 120 metres long and 15 metres wide. Coarse-grained golden sand, a rocky section in the west and boats anchoring offshore in summer define the scenery.

Its strength lies in this combination of an easy swimming stop and good infrastructure. You can hire sun loungers and parasols, use a shower and travel there by public bus. Families are specifically addressed as a target group, although you should be aware that the beach becomes very busy during the season. Costa d’en Blanes is therefore less suitable if you want complete seclusion and better suited to an easily accessible beach day that you can combine with Marineland, a walk along Paseo Calvià or a detour to Puerto Portals.

Where is Costa d’en Blanes beach?

Costa d’en Blanes lies within the municipality of Calvià between Punta Negra and Puerto Portals, directly beside Marineland. The Calvià Tourism Organization assigns the beach to the Portals Nous area. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue lists Bendinat, or Castell de Bendinat, as its location. For finding your way locally, the names Costa d’en Blanes, Marineland and Puerto Portals are therefore particularly useful.

The beach is also called Platja d’en Blanes or Platja de sa Costa d’en Blanes. It is not one of the long beaches found in the neighbouring resorts but instead forms a short stretch of coastline with sand and a rocky inlet on its western side. According to the Calvià Tourism Organization, there is a quieter area beyond the rocks in the west.

The Balearic Islands beach catalogue lists Costa d’en Blanes as a beach within a protected natural area. At the same time, the immediate surroundings are clearly developed and shaped by Marineland, sports facilities and nearby Puerto Portals. You should therefore follow local signs, barriers and rules that may apply to specific areas.

How do you get to Costa d’en Blanes?

You can reach Costa d’en Blanes by car via the signposted Costa d’en Blanes exit or by public bus to the Marineland stop. The official Balearic Islands tourism portal gives a distance of 9 kilometres from Palma and 9.8 kilometres from Calvià.

If you are travelling from Palma, follow the signs to Costa d’en Blanes. From Palmanova, the access route described by the municipality leads via Son Caliu. Because Marineland is directly beside the beach, the attraction is a clear landmark. According to the Calvià Tourism Organization, the Marineland bus stop is on the opposite side of the road.

Plan your bus journey using the current timetable, as routes and service frequencies may change. The beach is generally connected to public transport. If you are travelling with children or carrying a lot of beach gear, bear in mind that you will need to cross the road after getting off the bus.

Attention: The Marineland stop is opposite the beach. Pay particular attention to traffic when crossing the road.

Where can you park at the beach?

Free parking is available, although this does not guarantee an open space during the peak season. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue lists free parking, while the Calvià Tourism Organization mentions several parking options in the surrounding area.

The beach lies beside Marineland and close to Puerto Portals, so beachgoers are not the only visitors in this area. Costa d’en Blanes is also listed as having high seasonal occupancy. Both factors mean you should not plan on finding a free space immediately beside the sand.

The access roads around Costa d’en Blanes and the area surrounding Marineland and Puerto Portals can help you find your way. Follow local signs and check whether specific rules apply to individual parking areas before leaving your car. The statement “free parking available” does not mean that every parking space in the surrounding area is free of charge.

Note: If you want to avoid the stress of finding a parking space, taking the public bus to Marineland is a practical alternative. The stop is directly opposite.

What are the sand, water and swimming conditions like?

Costa d’en Blanes has coarse-grained golden sand. The official Balearic Islands tourism portal describes the water as clear. Boats regularly anchor off the beach during summer, while farther east the yachts in Puerto Portals also shape the maritime surroundings.

A rocky inlet interrupts the sandy beach on its western side. The ground there is more uneven than on the central section of the beach. If you walk around the rocks, water shoes are a sensible precaution. The area described as quieter lies beyond this rocky section.

The municipality states that the seabed offshore consists of sand and seagrass. The anchorage is described as being between three and five metres deep, with boats frequently anchoring around two hectometres from the outer harbour area of Puerto Portals. These details refer to the anchorage offshore and not to the water depth directly beside the shore.

Costa d’en Blanes is officially promoted as suitable for families, and a lifeguard service is included among the listed facilities. Nevertheless, wind, waves and boat traffic can change. Follow the lifeguards’ instructions, any barriers in the water and the conditions on the day of your visit.

Is Costa d’en Blanes suitable for children?

The Balearic Islands tourism authority explicitly recommends Costa d’en Blanes for a beach day with children. Its sandy shore, manageable length of 120 metres and available tourist services such as sun loungers, parasols and a lifeguard service all support this recommendation.

Its location beside Marineland also makes it possible to combine a beach visit with this leisure attraction. Puerto Portals is nearby as well. If you are planning several activities, the beach is therefore suitable for either a few hours by the water or a longer stay.

However, its compact size has a downside during the peak season: the Balearic Islands beach catalogue classifies seasonal occupancy as high. The sandy area is only 15 metres wide, so it can become crowded. Arriving early may make it easier to find a spot, although it does not guarantee a quiet beach.

Rocks border the sand on the western side. You should supervise children particularly carefully there. The beach’s family-friendly classification is no substitute for following the lifeguards’ instructions or for adult supervision.

If you do not want to leave the beach, you should therefore not rely on being able to buy refreshments right beside your sun lounger.

When is the best time to visit, and how crowded does it get?

Costa d’en Blanes is very busy during the season, so visiting outside the usual peak periods is a better choice if you want more space. There is no specific time when the beach can reliably be expected to remain empty.

Several factors explain the crowds: the beach is only 120 metres long and 15 metres wide, has basic tourist facilities and lies directly beside Marineland and close to Puerto Portals. During summer, many boats also enter the bay or the neighbouring harbour area. This creates a lively maritime scene rather than the atmosphere of a secluded cala.

If having a particular spot on the sand matters to you, allow enough flexibility in your schedule. The same applies to parking, as the available free spaces may be occupied when visitor numbers are high. Travelling by bus makes you less dependent on finding a parking space.

Costa d’en Blanes remains an appealing beach destination outside summer: the official Balearic Islands portal associates it with all four seasons. However, you should not automatically expect hire services and lifeguard coverage outside the peak season to be the same as in summer.

Note: Parasols are available for hire. Even so, it is better to bring your own sun protection rather than depending on the hire service.

What can you do nearby?

Marineland, Paseo Calvià and the Puerto Portals area are directly beside Costa d’en Blanes. This makes it easy to combine a beach day with other activities without travelling far.

Marineland is immediately beside the beach. Puerto Portals lies to the east and has restaurants and bars. The harbour is also a prominent part of the view: numerous yachts are moored there in summer, while boats also anchor off Costa d’en Blanes.

Paseo Calvià also runs near the beach. This walking route connects places within the municipality of Calvià. According to the municipality, you can walk from Costa d’en Blanes towards Palmanova and Magaluf or in the other direction towards Portals Nous and Bendinat.

If you want to explore other swimming spots, Playa Loratori, Playa Punta Portals and Cala del Guix are listed as nearby beaches. They differ in location and character, so you should check their current facilities, access and occupancy separately.

What should you know before visiting?

Costa d’en Blanes is particularly suitable if you want a small, developed sandy beach with a bus connection and attractions close by. It is less reliable for peace and quiet, plenty of open space on the sand or an undeveloped natural setting because of its high seasonal occupancy and surroundings.

Bring your own sun protection despite the parasol hire service, as neither the availability of hire parasols nor natural shade is guaranteed. Water shoes may be useful in the rocky western area. If you want to reach the quieter section there, expect more uneven ground.
