Son Caliu

Son Caliu is a narrow, 80-metre-long sandy beach on the coast of Calvià, between Palmanova and Costa d’en Blanes. Where is Son Caliu beach, and what is it like?

Son Caliu lies within the municipality of Calvià between es Carregador and Punta des Carabiners, where Palmanova meets Costa d’en Blanes. The Balearic Islands Beach Catalogue places the beach eight kilometres from Calvià; the official tourism portal of the Balearic Islands states that it is 7.6 kilometres away by road and 13 kilometres from Palma.

The location explains the beach’s distinctive character. Hotels and residential buildings stand behind parts of the coastline, while other sections are shaped by rocks, low cliffs, and pine trees. Unlike Palmanova’s main beaches, Son Caliu does not have a large, continuous promenade. Instead, access points lead to the cove from the surrounding streets and buildings.

Son Caliu is therefore neither a secluded natural cove nor a fully developed holiday beach. The municipality of Calvià distinguishes between three areas: a sloping sandy area with Posidonia remains, a more urban section for sun loungers and parasols, and a rockier stretch of coast with small adjoining coves. How big is Son Caliu, and how is the beach laid out?

According to the Balearic Islands Beach Catalogue, Son Caliu measures 80 metres long and 15 metres wide. Its limited width is particularly noticeable during a visit: the beach extends along the coast but offers only a narrow strip for towels and beachgoers.

The area of 3,106 square metres comes from MallorCard and may also include paved or adjoining beach areas; for the traditional sandy strip, the official measurements of 80 by 15 metres are more relevant. Slightly different descriptions give a width of up to 18 metres, while the Balearic Islands Beach Catalogue and the official tourism portal of the Balearic Islands both state 15 metres.

Descriptions of the sand’s colour also vary slightly. The Balearic Islands Beach Catalogue and the municipality of Calvià refer to golden sand, while the official tourism portal of the Balearic Islands describes a narrow strip of white sand. In practice, the exact description of its colour matters less than the visible combination of sand, Posidonia, paved areas, and rocks.

The central sandy area is best suited to sunbathing and provides the most comfortable entry into the water. In the more urban section, paved areas, a jetty, and access points over the rocky ground supplement the small sandy area. Toward the edges, the coastline becomes more irregular, with rocks, small cliffs, and so-called micro-coves clustered closely together.

What are the water, sand, and entry into the sea like?

Entry into the water is mostly gentle along the main sandy section, while the rocky edges have more uneven ground. Depending on the spot, the seabed there consists of sand, stones, and seaweed; water shoes are useful if you want to explore the side coves.

When the sea is calm, Son Caliu can be a pleasant place to swim; the official tourism portal of the Balearic Islands highlights its clean water. However, the cove is exposed to winds from the southeast to south. The Balearic Islands Beach Catalogue and the municipality of Calvià therefore advise against anchoring off Son Caliu in such conditions. The anchorage consists of sand and seaweed at a depth of three to five metres.

Warning: Always assess the current sea conditions before going for a longer swim. Southeast and south winds can change conditions in the open cove.

How do you get to Son Caliu, and where can you park?

By car, you can reach Son Caliu via Palmanova, Calle Miguel Machado, and then Avenida Son Caliu. The avenue runs directly alongside the beach; according to the Balearic Islands Beach Catalogue, the route is signposted from Palmanova.

If you are coming from Palma or via the Palma–Andratx road, first follow the signs to Palmanova. From there, Calle Miguel Machado leads to Avenida Son Caliu. The municipality of Calvià describes access by private vehicle as straightforward.

Free parking is available in the surrounding streets. Parking here primarily means on-street parking; do not expect a large beach car park directly beside the sand. During the season, the beach’s high occupancy can make finding a space more difficult, especially if you arrive later in the day.

You can also travel to Son Caliu by bus. The Balearic Islands Beach Catalogue lists Palmanova as the location of the nearest stop, while the municipality of Calvià refers more generally to stops nearby. Plan the appropriate stop in advance, as different services may use different stops in Palmanova or Son Caliu.

Note: If you are coming by car, arriving early is advisable. Parking is free on the street, not in a large beach car park.

What facilities are available at the beach?

Son Caliu offers a small range of basic facilities but mainly benefits from restaurants and other amenities in the immediate area. The municipality of Calvià lists two waste bins, bus connections, and restaurants among the available services.

In the more urban section, there are paved areas where sun loungers and parasols may be set up seasonally. MallorCard also lists showers and waste bins. As beach services and their operating times may change, you should not assume that every facility will be available, particularly outside the main season.

Restaurants, bars, and small shops can be found around the hotels and residential buildings. They are not all located directly on the sand, but the semi-urban setting means they are within walking distance. Natural shade is limited. Buildings, parasols, or trees may provide shade in certain areas, but you should not rely on this along the narrow strip of sand. A hat, sun protection, and water therefore belong in your beach bag. If you bring your own parasol, bear in mind that the area is only 15 metres wide and offers little space when occupancy is high.

Do not automatically rely on lifeguards; before swimming, check the flags, signs, and current notices at the access point.

When is the best time to visit Son Caliu?

Son Caliu is generally quietest in the morning or later in the afternoon. From late morning onward, the high seasonal occupancy becomes more noticeable across the small area.

The official classification of “high occupancy” is more important than the beach’s reputation as a quiet alternative to Palmanova. Son Caliu may feel more relaxed than the neighbouring resort’s large beaches, but quiet does not mean empty here. Because of its limited width, relatively few towels and sun loungers are enough to make the sandy area look full.

Visitor numbers often fall again in the late afternoon. For guests staying in Son Caliu, Palmanova, or Costa d’en Blanes, the cove is therefore particularly suitable for a shorter swim. Anyone who wants to spend an entire day with plenty of space on the sand will find more suitable areas at Palmanova’s larger beaches.

Is Son Caliu suitable for children, swimmers, and snorkellers?

Anyone primarily looking for a wide sandy area should therefore not mistake Son Caliu for a large family beach.

Experienced swimmers can use the jetty and platform to reach deeper water more quickly. The rocky areas at the sides provide more underwater structure and are described as more interesting for snorkelling. However, the seabed there is stonier and more uneven. Water shoes make access easier.

What is near Son Caliu?

The beaches of Palmanova, Portals Nous, and Puerto Portals are nearby, along with several restaurants and hotels. This makes it easy to include Son Caliu as a short swimming stop during a stay on Mallorca’s southwest coast.

To the west or toward Palmanova, you will find the larger beaches of Es Carregador, Platja de Palma Nova, and Son Maties. They offer more continuous stretches of sand than Son Caliu and are therefore convenient alternatives if the small cove is too crowded. In the other direction are Portals Nous and Puerto Portals, with a marina, restaurants, and shops. Coastal paths are used for walking and jogging; the accessibility of individual sections may depend on your starting point. Hotel Son Caliu Spa Oasis is located on Avenida Son Caliu and, according to its own information, has private access to the beach.

This stretch of coast is less practical for boats. The Balearic Islands Beach Catalogue lists Club Nàutic Santa Ponça, 0.8 nautical miles away, as the nearest harbour facility, while the municipality of Calvià names Club Náutico de Palmanova at the same distance. Because of these conflicting names, you should not rely solely on the stated distance when making nautical plans.

What should you keep in mind for a beach day?

Water shoes, sun protection, and an early arrival are particularly useful at Son Caliu. Water shoes help along the rocky and stony edges, while bringing your own sun protection compensates for the limited shade.

Choose your spot according to what you plan to do: the main sandy area is better for sunbathing and offers a gentler entry into the water. The paved section with the jetty is practical for starting a swim directly. The rocky micro-coves feel more natural but require surer footing.

Posidonia on the shore is not unusual at Son Caliu. If you prefer a beach that looks completely cleared, the larger, more intensively managed areas of Palmanova may better suit your expectations. If, on the other hand, you want to combine sand, rocks, and short swimming distances, Son Caliu offers several types of coastline within a compact area.
