Portals Nous is a small sandy beach on Mallorca’s southwest coast, also listed as Platja de Portals Nous and Cala Bendinat in the Balearic Islands beach catalogue. Just 59 metres long and 20 metres wide, it lies in a U-shaped bay between Cala Portals Nous and Punta de na Dina. Fine golden sand, low rocks with pine trees, several small boats at the back of the beach, and a backdrop of private homes and holiday accommodation create a setting that feels intimate yet is clearly influenced by the nearby resort.

What makes it special is the contrast with the Puerto Portals marina, just 0.3 nautical miles away. Other beach guides also use it for the much larger Playa de s’Oratori, or Oratori Beach. Where exactly is Portals Nous beach?

The 59-metre-long Portals Nous beach lies in Portals Nous, around ten kilometres from Palma, between Cala Portals Nous and Punta de na Dina. It is part of Mallorca’s southwestern coastal landscape and is also explicitly called Cala Bendinat in the Balearic Islands beach catalogue.

The bay is U-shaped and enclosed by low rocks, some of which are covered with pine trees. Private homes and holiday accommodation stand behind and above the beach. It is therefore not an undeveloped natural cove, even though the beach is marked as a protected natural area in the Balearic Islands beach catalogue. Pay attention to local signs concerning protected areas, dunes, plants, boat zones or other rules.

Small boats lie or stand at the back of the beach and form part of the bay’s established appearance. Because of the beach’s limited overall size, little space remains for your towel once many people arrive.

Note: On maps and in beach guides, “Portals Nous Beach” may also refer to Playa de s’Oratori. The small beach described here is Platja de Portals Nous, or Cala Bendinat, with a length of 59 metres.

How do you get to Cala Bendinat in Portals Nous?

To reach Cala Bendinat by car, first follow the signs to the Puerto Portals marina and then look for the name Cala Bendinat. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue describes access by car as easy but also notes that details may have changed since publication.

This double reference is important: Puerto Portals is the area’s prominent landmark, but it is not the beach itself. The name Portals Nous is also used for the larger Playa de s’Oratori. If you enter only “Portals Nous Beach,” your navigation system may therefore direct you to a different beach.

Public transport takes you to the Portals Nous area. According to the Balearic Islands beach catalogue, the nearest bus stop is approximately 600 metres from the beach. Before travelling, check which current service goes to Portals Nous and which walking route your timetable shows to Cala Bendinat.

For Playa de s’Oratori, beach guides describe access from the town through a small alley near the church and then down steps. You should not automatically apply these directions to Cala Bendinat: they refer to the other, larger beach that also appears under the name Portals Nous.

Where can you park at Portals Nous beach?

Free parking options have been listed around the beach, but available spaces are not guaranteed given the high occupancy during the season. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue mentions free parking around the beach, while the official Puerto Portals marina publishes its own parking rates for its car parks.

You should therefore distinguish between parking spaces around the bay and the marina’s parking facilities. A space within or directly beside Puerto Portals is not automatically free. Information about free parking may also change because of new traffic regulations, road markings or access restrictions.

The beach’s small size does not automatically mean that few visitors arrive by car. According to the Balearic Islands beach catalogue, Cala Bendinat attracts both locals and holidaymakers and reaches high occupancy during the season. Allow enough time to search for parking and pay close attention to signs, coloured kerb markings and notices at entrances.

Warning: Do not assume that you can park free of charge directly beside the bay. Puerto Portals lists rates for its own car parks, while the beach information mentions free spaces only in the surrounding area.

What are the sand, water and swimming like in Portals Nous?

Cala Bendinat has fine golden sand and lies in a small U-shaped bay. Low rocks frame the water, while several small boats also shape the appearance of the beach’s rear section.

The Balearic Islands beach catalogue describes the bay as offering favourable anchoring conditions. The seabed consists of sand and seaweed, and the stated water depth in the anchoring area is between two and three metres. These figures describe nautical conditions, not entry into the water from the shore. They do not indicate that the swimming area remains shallow throughout.

Boats also use the bay. Swimmers should therefore watch for movement in the water and possible anchoring or access areas. Favourable conditions for skippers do not mean that swimming is permitted everywhere.

For families, the sand is the main advantage. Signs, buoys and current conditions will show whether the water entry is evenly shallow, whether lifeguards are present and which areas are designated for boats. Do not automatically expect the same facilities at this small beach as at the neighbouring Playa de s’Oratori.

What facilities are available directly on the beach?

You should not count on extensive beach infrastructure at Cala Bendinat. Bring water, sun protection and everything else you need, and check which seasonal services are actually open when you arrive.

The overlap between the beach names can quickly create false expectations, particularly regarding facilities. Sun loungers, parasols, showers, toilets, step-free access, places to eat, volleyball and various water sports are listed for Playa de s’Oratori. However, these details do not automatically apply to the 59-metre-long Cala Bendinat.

What is certain is that Portals Nous has restaurants and everyday amenities. Restaurants, cafés, bars and shops are located along Carretera d’Andratx, where a supermarket, bookshops and newsagents are also listed. Puerto Portals adds restaurants, bars and nightlife venues. Neither is located directly on the small strip of sand, but they provide options for shopping or visiting a restaurant after your beach trip.

You should not rely on natural shade either. Although pine trees grow on the low rocks around the bay, they do not guarantee a permanently shaded place to lie on the sand. Bringing your own sun protection is therefore particularly advisable.

When is Portals Nous busy, and when is it worth visiting?

Portals Nous is very busy during the season; the Balearic Islands beach catalogue explicitly classifies occupancy as high. With a length of just 59 metres and a width of 20 metres, the available sandy area can fill up quickly.

There are no fixed monthly or time-of-day figures for occupancy at Cala Bendinat. Visitor numbers for the neighbouring Playa de s’Oratori also cannot simply be applied to this small bay. If having enough space is important to you, keep your plans flexible and consider an alternative nearby.

Visitors include both locals and holidaymakers. Its proximity to Portals Nous, holiday accommodation and Puerto Portals explains why the beach is in high demand despite its limited size. It is not a secluded hidden gem but a small town beach in an internationally influenced stretch of coastline.

Outside the main swimming season, Puerto Portals remains a destination because of its restaurants, shops and events. Services, lifeguard cover and open facilities at the small beach may vary depending on the season.

What is near Cala Bendinat?

The closest point of reference is Puerto Portals, whose marina is just 0.3 nautical miles from the beach. The marina is known for its maritime infrastructure, large yachts, restaurants and nightlife venues, creating a clear contrast with the small bay enclosed by low rocks.

In Portals Nous, restaurants, cafés, bars and shops are concentrated mainly along Carretera d’Andratx. You can therefore combine a beach visit with shopping or a meal without having to rely solely on any facilities that may be available directly at Cala Bendinat.

Other nearby beaches include Playa de s’Oratori, Illetas, Cala Comtessa and Palmanova. Playa de s’Oratori is particularly important because some beach guides also call it Portals Nous Beach. More facilities and water sports are listed there than at Cala Bendinat.

Illetas consists of several beaches close together and fills up quickly because of the surrounding residential buildings and hotels. Cala Comtessa is described as a small bay with very clear, calm water, a gentle entry, pine trees and few services. Palmanova is another well-known beach alternative in the southwest. Which option suits you best depends mainly on whether you are looking for a small bay or more extensive infrastructure.

What should you consider before your beach day?

Before setting off, check the destination name, parking situation and signs around the bay. Search specifically for “Cala Bendinat” or “Platja de Portals Nous” if you want to visit the 59-metre-long beach.

Bring enough drinking water and sun protection. The pine trees around the bay do not guarantee shade on the sand, and the facilities at this small beach cannot automatically be equated with those at Playa de s’Oratori. You should also not rely on descriptions that mention only “Portals Nous Beach” when checking for toilets, showers, sun lounger hire or lifeguards.

Keep an eye on the rear section of the beach with its small boats and do not block any visible access points. In the water, it is important to be considerate of possible anchoring and boat areas. The sandy seabed with seaweed and the depth of between two and three metres refer to anchoring conditions in the bay, not to a guaranteed swimming depth near the shore.

As the beach is marked as a protected natural area, you should follow signs concerning protected zones and local rules. Whether dogs are permitted may depend on the season and municipal regulations. The current signs at the beach entrance are decisive.
