Aena solar power target: 51% of electricity by 2029
Aena plans to get 51% of all its electricity from solar power by 2029. Sara Aagesen called the target “extraordinary” during a Wednesday visit to the solar park at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport in Madrid.
The Madrid site forms part of Aena’s solar-power and climate action plans, which already reach 12 airports. Panels are being installed on roofs, canopies, car parks and ground-level sites.
Net Zero goal follows in 2030
Aagesen said Aena is due to become “Net Zero” in 2030, a goal she described as even more remarkable. She said the airport operator’s action could encourage other companies and public bodies to follow.
Spain generated almost 57% of its electricity from renewable sources last year, she said. The country now has 56 gigawatts of installed solar capacity — 12 times the level in 2018.
Nearly €13,000 million investment plan awaits approval
Transport Minister Óscar Puente expects the Council of Ministers to approve Aena’s DORA III investment plan in September. It earmarks nearly €13,000 million for airports across the Aena network between 2027 and 2031.
The funding is intended to maintain airport quality, safety and capacity. Aagesen also pointed to renewable hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuels, known as SAF, as essential for cutting emissions in parts of aviation that are difficult to decarbonise.
