Balearics AI projects get €454,600 in funding

Spain is putting €454,600 into two artificial intelligence (AI) projects in the Balearic Islands, aimed at businesses and healthcare. The projects are being funded through the Red IA and Red IA Salud schemes, but the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Service has not said what either Balearic project involves. Digital Minister Óscar López announced the awards on Monday in Santander.

Red.es, the public body managing the schemes, is overseeing the money. Across Spain, the latest decisions cover 372 AI projects worth €180 million.

Funding for firms and healthcare

Red IA has €130 million from Feder funds for technology development, innovation and bringing AI into production processes. It backs 300 business projects, selected from more than 1,000 applications across Spain.

The selected work includes intelligent assistants, digital twins, advanced robotics, computer vision, cyber security and predictive systems. Small and medium-sized businesses account for 70% of the projects, with individual awards ranging from €400,000 to €5 million.

Red IA Salud provides €50 million for 72 healthcare projects. They cover prediction, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up, as well as clinical, biomedical and pharmaceutical research and emergency response.

López said firms will not be able to compete without AI in the future. For the Balearic Islands, the immediate outcome is funding for two projects, with the details still undisclosed.
