Spanish air safety deal links pilots

A two-year air safety deal brings pilots and air traffic controllers together across Spanish airspace. State air-navigation provider Enaire and the Official College of Commercial Aviation Pilots (COPAC) signed the protocol in Madrid on Thursday, 3 September. Their plan is to share operational knowledge and technical information to strengthen safety.

Controllers and pilots will work directly on navigation studies, flight procedures and reviews of operational risks. They will also help review the official Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP), while running joint training programmes and providing technical advice.

The agreement can be extended beyond its initial two years, up to a maximum of eight years. It expands work the two organisations have carried out since 2019 through an observatory for safety, efficiency and sustainability in aviation.

Enaire chief Enrique Maurer said pilots’ operational experience was “fundamental” to improving air-navigation services. COPAC dean Carlos San José said combining the two technical viewpoints would give professionals more precise information and improve safety for users.
