Mallorca flood warning: Alaró stream now tracked live

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

On Mallorca, a new station in Alaró tracks the Solleric stream’s flow in real time to help warn of flooding. The town council and the University of the Balearic Islands installed it, the council said on Thursday. It was already taking readings during last weekend’s heavy rain linked to the weather system Adam, when a red alert was issued.

The station feeds its readings into RiscBal’s monitoring network. Its director, Joan Estrany, says the figures can show when the stream starts to swell and how its flow changes, giving people and emergency services earlier warning. Anyone can check the data on RiscBal’s website or mobile apps.

Alaró council spent more than €10,000 on the installation, including clearing the area and restoring a dry-stone wall. The Balearic government’s Directorate General for Emergencies and the Interior and the University of the Balearic Islands funded the measuring station itself.

The new readings add to those from RiscBal’s weather station at Es Rafal in Alaró, which records temperature, soil moisture and rainfall.
