Antoni Bestard memorial stone to be laid in Inca

Inca, Mallorca, will install a Pedra de la Memòria for trade unionist and anarchist press contributor Antoni Bestard Seguí on Wednesday 26 August. The ceremony will take place outside his former home in Sant Antoni street.

Bestard was shot dead in Palma on 26 August 1939 during Francoist repression. Relatives, institutional representatives, memorial organisations and local residents are due to attend the event, held 87 years after his death.

Democratic memory initiative

Inca Town Council said the stone forms part of its democratic-memory policies, intended to preserve the memory of people who suffered repression during the Civil War.

It will be the fifth Pedra de la Memòria installed in Inca, joining those dedicated to Antoni Mateu Ferrer, Pablo Ferrer Madariaga, Gabriel Buades Pons and Llorenç Beltran Salvà.

Bestard’s links to the labour movement

Born in Inca in 1891, Bestard began work at the Can Xilles factory before becoming involved in the trade-union movement. He joined La Justícia, an anarchist organisation linked to the National Confederation of Labour.

His work was closely connected to Inca’s labour movement and its footwear and textile industries. The council said he addressed numerous rallies and wrote for the press in defence of workers’ rights.
