Ara Més seeks to lead united Balearic election list
Palma, Mallorca: Ara Més wants progressive parties across the Balearic Islands to share a ballot paper in Spain’s 29 November general election, with one of its own candidates at the top. The alliance set out its plan on Wednesday, 7 October, and says talks have begun with Sumar, Podem and Esquerra Unida de Balears. It brings together MÉS per Mallorca, Més per Menorca and Ara Eivissa.
Ara Més representative Carme Gomila warned that a split vote could leave thousands without representation. But she ruled out the primary election proposed by Podemos at the national level. She did not say who Ara Més would put forward to lead the list.
Gomila said the campaign should focus on the cost of living on the islands: young people struggling to move out and families counting what they have left at the end of the month. She wants a Balearic representative in Madrid to press those concerns.
Senate candidates are a separate question. Lluís Apesteguia of MÉS per Mallorca said each island would decide whether to seek a joint list with the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party. Mallorca elects three senators; Menorca, Eivissa and Formentera elect one each.
