Mallorca election pact stalls: Ara Més rejects Podemos

Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, still has no agreed joint left-wing election list: Ara Més insists on leading an islands-wide ticket and refuses to give Podemos the top spot. It also rejects alternating with Podemos any seats the alliance might win. The parties face a Friday deadline to register election coalitions, but talks are continuing on Wednesday, 14 October.

Podemos is still seeking regional deals. Belarra says the party is working against the clock on alliances in the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands and the Valencian Community. That leaves room for a Balearic agreement even if the parties fail to reach one elsewhere.

Beyond the islands, former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau said on Wednesday that she would give up a bid to lead the government if it helped bring Podemos and other parties onto one list. She was also open to changing the proposed alliance’s name. Shortly afterwards, the parties involved unveiled the Frente Amplio logo and social media profiles.

Podemos politician Irene Montero, meanwhile, is sticking with a campaign partnership with Gabriel Rufián under her party’s agreement with ERC. For Mallorca and the other Balearic Islands, the immediate question remains whether the parties can settle who leads the list before Friday.
