In Palma, Mallorca, Francina Armengol puts housing at the heart of the 29 November general election: she predicts another victory for Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and calls for the Balearic left to join forces for the Senate.

At a party meeting on Saturday, 10 October, members unanimously confirmed Armengol as the Balearic Socialist Party (PSIB-PSOE) candidate for Spain’s Congress of Deputies, which she currently presides over.

Postal votes and the campaign ahead

Armengol urged left-wing parties across the Balearic Islands to run a joint Senate ticket, arguing it would give them the best chance of a strong result. She sees the general election as the start of a longer campaign leading to municipal, island and regional elections in 2027.

She accused the People’s Party (PP) and Vox of casting doubt on postal voting. Armengol said she feared they would question the result if Sánchez won on 29 November.

Housing and funding for the islands

Armengol blamed the Balearic government led by Marga Prohens for failing to curb rising housing prices. She called for a majority in Congress that could address the housing problem.

She also criticised Prohens’s opposition to a proposed funding system for the islands. Armengol said the outcome would affect healthcare, education and social policy. Looking beyond November, she backed Rosario Sánchez to lead the Balearic government after a Socialist victory.
