Mallorca: Armengol seeks PSIB lead in snap election
In Palma, Mallorca, Francina Armengol wants to lead the PSIB into Spain’s 29 November general election, but a party primary must decide who tops its list. Deputy party leader Rosario Sánchez praised her as an excellent choice on Monday, shortly after Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced the early vote. The PSIB has not yet set a date for its primary.
Rosario Sánchez said Armengol, the party’s leader, had made clear that she wanted the top spot. The timetable for choosing a candidate depends on the party’s national leadership, which met on Monday.
The election announcement came as the PSIB pressed its housing proposals for the Balearic Islands. On Tuesday, the Balearic Parliament is due to consider whether to take forward a PSIB bill that would let councils declare their areas to be under housing pressure.
PSIB parliamentary spokesman Iago Negueruela raised the bill at the same press conference. Rosario Sánchez, who is set to stand as the Socialists’ candidate for the Balearic Parliament, blamed regional leader Prohens, the People’s Party and Vox for making it harder for families to find decent housing. She also criticised Prohens for opposing two housing decrees rejected by Spain’s Congress.
