Mallorca: 30 at-risk older people get help, cases up 43%

Thirty older people at risk of being left without proper protection received help from the Council of Mallorca in 2025, nine more than the previous year. The 43% rise comes as the service added ten temporary residential places at the Hermanitas for people who cannot safely remain at home in a serious situation. Each stay can last for up to nine months while staff work to restore stability and find the right support.

The Council of Mallorca said the places provide accommodation, food and full care. Guillermo Sánchez, the island’s social welfare councillor and president of the Mallorcan Institute of Social Affairs (IMAS), said the service had been reviewed, its internal work improved and new resources added.

Most requests come from outside Palma

The service received 33 applications in 2025. Twenty-two came from the Part Forana — Mallorca’s municipalities outside Palma — while 11 came from the island capital.

Municipal social services referred 14 cases to IMAS, compared with nine the year before. Sánchez said the expanded service could spot risks more quickly and act with support suited to each person.

When IMAS steps in

The scheme is for Mallorca residents aged 65 or over. It also covers people over 55 with a recognised disability of at least 65%, provided there is a prior professional report.

IMAS can intervene over serious neglect in care, medication or basic needs, family violence, severe physical or psychological abuse, harmful dependency between a carer and the person receiving care, and serious financial abuse. Its staff assess the risk, advise municipal social services and coordinate the social and care support involved.
