Mallorca storms: Eight incidents, three Palma parks shut
On Mallorca, bad weather causes eight incidents by 10am on Wednesday, 7 October: Palma shuts three parks as trees come down. The island’s 112 emergency coordination centre records four incidents in Calvià, two in Palma and one each in Sineu and Felanitx, according to the Balearic government’s Department of the Presidency, Government Action Coordination and Local Cooperation.
Four incidents involve fallen trees. The centre also records basic service cuts, accidental falls, pieces coming loose from street fixtures and liquids on roads. Palma City Council says de la Ribera, Can Terrers and Bellver parks will stay closed from 7am to 5pm on Wednesday.
Spain’s State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, has a yellow warning for rain and thunderstorms across the Balearic Islands until 4pm. The 112 emergency service has lowered its alert from orange to yellow as the storm begins to ease.
But it may not be over. Eduardo Parga, director of the emergency coordination centre, says thunderstorms could return and bring 20 to 30 litres per square metre of rain in a short time. The unsettled weather could last until Thursday afternoon, possibly longer. By then, the storm is expected to focus on northern Mallorca and the channel between Mallorca and Menorca.
