Palma, Mallorca, Spain: An early general election on 29 November changes the backdrop for talks on the Balearic Islands’ 2027 budget before negotiations have even begun. Antoni Costa, the islands’ minister for economy, finance and innovation, said on Friday, 9 October, that the government still aims to pass the budget on time. He could not say whether it will succeed.

Budget deadline approaches

Costa’s department has spent months working on a spending ceiling, the step before drawing up the budget. The budget is due to be submitted to the Balearic parliament before 1 November, but negotiations have not started.

Costa declined to speculate on whether Vox would take a different approach during the election campaign. He described relations with its parliamentary group as cordial.

Prices and population add pressure

Costa said inflation is weighing heavily on budget planning and on people across the islands. July’s human pressure indicator, which counts residents and people staying temporarily, put the number of people on the Balearic Islands at nearly 2.1 million — up 1.45% on the same month last year.

Costa said he had not yet studied the figures, so he could not tell which group accounted for the increase.
