Balearic Government puts €42m into 700 public apps

People using Balearic Government digital services should no longer have to enter the same details again and again under a €42 million plan announced in Palma on Thursday, 3 September. The Balearic Government will gradually update more than 700 public apps between 2026 and 2031. The Ministry of Economy, Finance and Innovation says the aim is simpler, better-connected and safer public services.

The money will not replace every app at once. First, the Government plans to map its full technology system, identify where the pressure points are and rank work by urgency, cost and practicality.

The programme has five main areas, split into ten initiatives and about 70 measures. They include cutting duplicate systems, updating older apps, linking systems and databases more closely, and moving more processes online and into automated workflows.

Officials carried out 72 interviews with operational and technology managers while preparing the plan. They found 700 apps at very different stages of updating, integration and potential for further development.

Better links between systems are intended to let different parts of the administration share information securely, so citizens do not have to submit the same information several times. The ministry says this should also reduce duplicate work and free staff to provide information, support people and resolve cases.

Automation will target procedures that still demand a heavy manual workload, with the aim of cutting errors and speeding up processing. The plan also introduces one model for planning, coordinating and overseeing Government technology projects, while strengthening app security, quality, maintenance and future development.

The Balearic Agency for Digitalisation, Cybersecurity and Telecommunications, IB Digital, will develop and carry out the measures.
